It’s a well known fact that elderly people can become isolated in their own homes, often with just the TV for company. Whilst wanting to remain in your own home is entirely understandable, elderly people and their families often have to battle with the decision to remain at home or move into a care home, like Derriford House.
Whilst each choice is individual to each person’s circumstances, needs and wants, today we’re going to focus on the benefits of moving into a care home when it comes to elderly people’s health and happiness from a social interaction perspective.
Choosing to live a care home like Derriford House offers people the following benefits:
Improved mental health: Socialising with others helps to boost mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote overall well-being for elderly people. Engaging in group activities and discussions keeps the mind active and sharp, which is especially important for elderly people.
Encouragement of physical activity: Many care homes offer a variety of physical activities, such as group exercise classes, walks, and outings, that can help to maintain physical health and mobility. Derriford House is no different and we’re proud to have a dedicated Activities Co-ordinator on hand to keep our residents active all through the week. These activities also provide opportunities for elderly people to engage with others and form new relationships.
A sense of belonging: Living in a care home provides elderly people with a community of individuals who share similar experiences, and provides opportunities for residents to form new relationships and develop a sense of belonging.
Joy and purpose: Participating in social activities and events provides a sense of purpose, enhances self-esteem, and brings happiness to daily life, which is especially important for elderly people.
At Derriford House, we understand the importance of social engagement for elderly people and strive to provide a range of activities and events that meet their needs and interests. Our dedicated activity coordinator is dedicated to ensuring that each resident has the opportunity to socialise, participate in activities, and connect with others in a supportive and nurturing environment. Keep an eye out for some of the activities our residents get up to in up coming posts!
