OOPS I DID IT AGAIN

Britney isn’t the only one.

How many of us do the same things over and over? How many of us have such ingrained habits, patterns and responses that even if we know they don't work or serve us, we default to them anyway?

I truly believe that sometimes we need to experience things multiple times in order to pay attention to them.

We cycle through the seasons, our menstrual cycles and with the moon and every cycle gives us an opportunity to review our habits and reset our patterns.

Sometimes our bodies stop us in our tracks before we even know we need to be stopped.

Listening to them is probably the best thing we can ever do. I hope you will use the summer break to tune into yours.

MENOPAUSAL?

Think you might be?

If you are a woman 40+ and experience any of these symptoms, it’s very possible you are.
- lack of sleep
- hot flushes
- anxiety
- brain fog
- irregular periods
- irritability
- headaches
- breast tenderness
- mood swings
- low libido

Perimenopause can feel very disorientating, confusing and isolating. Lots of women (me included) enter this phase suddenly feeling very unlike themselves.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Bendy Yoga runs yoga for menopause workshops and retreats to give women an opportunity to come together and learn holistic tools & tips to manage the most commonly experienced menopause symptoms.

All so you feel ready to embrace this often tricky life stage.

ALCOHOL & MENOPAUSE

Do they mix?

In a word, no.

Sorry but it’s true. There are lots of reasons for this….

❌Our tolerance level for drinking alcohol significantly reduces during menopause, in part due to the loss of water as we age.

❌Alcohol often makes symptoms like poor sleep, hot flushes, low mood, irritability and anxiety worse.

❌Hangovers can become much worse. As we age, our liver enzymes diminish so we don’t break down alcohol as easily as we used to.

❌Alcohol disrupts blood sugar levels. In menopause our oestrogen and progesterone levels decline. These hormones influence how insulin works in the body so when they reduce, they affect our sensitivity to insulin and changing blood sugar levels.

❌The risk of breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and ‘midlife middle’ significantly increase with high alcohol consumption.

I’ve recently had lots of special occasions to celebrate this month and in all of them, I’ve had a drink or three. I enjoyed them all but I’m paying the price now.

My sleep was erratic every night I had a drink (even if it was only one) so the cumulative effect is a very tired and snappy Tamsin 😴🤯🫣

It’s not easy to change our habits, especially when we enjoy a social drink or two so what can we do?

✅Drink in moderation (no more than one small drink a day)

✅Spread the drinks out rather than binge them

✅Choose specific times to drink - for example only the weekend or when you go to a restaurant

✅If you tend punctuate the end of the day with a drink or use it as a way to unwind, perhaps try substituting drinking with something else you find relaxing instead. Dark chocolate, 10 minutes of yoga / meditation / dancing / singing or anything else you enjoy

✅Increase accountability by committing to reduce alcohol consumption with a friend and do it together.

THE WEATHER ☀️☔️

How changeable the weather is. One minute wide brim hats and sunnies, the next jumpers and raincoats.

The weather is such a great metaphor for life.

It’s unpredictable.
It isn’t fixed.

Same goes for
…our hormones
…our politics
…our rights
…our bodily autonomy.

I have been quietly seething about the overturning of Roe v Wade and despairing over the kind of world my daughters will inherit, but I know my quiet grief and anger achieves nothing for them or anyone else.

As .school puts it, the menstrual cycle and the journey into menopause show us there is a natural time for rage.

The time is now.

This is not a time to keep quiet.

We need to put our collective rage into action.

Even if you’re not resident in the US, you can lend your support by donating to abortionfunds.org or togetherrising.org/give

And if you don’t feel the same rage or the inclination to do anything about this abhorrent infringement on women’s rights, there’s always the weather to talk about.

It’s the safest subject of conversation in every country.

Thank you to all of you who came to celebrate the (day before) Summer Solstice at the bendy yoga Women’s Circle tonight.

As Brené Brown says, your vulnerability is your true strength.

Our modern lives lead us to believe other things are more important than us.

But when we share our stories and experiences - and are really heard - we realise nothing is more important.

It feels like a revolutionary act of sisterhood to gather together…and that feels so good!

I loved it. I hope you did too.

SUMMER SOLSTICE WOMEN’S CIRCLE

Women are hardwired for connection.

For thousands of years, we have gathered together for rituals, to cook, to share, to listen and learn.

Nowadays, our world keeps us busy and apart. Our homes are like little islands keeping us separate from each other.

Since the Pandemic, this has only got worse as more and more of us now work from those islands as well.

How would it feel if you could:
⭕️Gather in a circle with other women to hear and be heard?

⭕️Share freely with no judgement, advice or opinion?

⭕️Pause the demands of modern life for an evening?

For the Summer Solstice this year, I am hosting a Women’s Circle to bring us together and celebrate the longest day of the year.

Monday 20 June, 7.30pm

This gathering will be hosted by me at the bendy tent but it will be led by all of us.

There is no charge to come along although spaces are limited so advance booking is required.

STANDING TALL

Ahhh bendy beginners, how I love you! 😍

This morning’s class was all about exploring standing postures and finding the sweet spot between effort and ease so we could stand tall.

How did we do that?

• Balanced the effort of trying something new with the ease of knowing what we have already learnt.

• Moved body and mind in harmony ☯️
If our minds judge our bodies, the balance of the practice is skewed in favour of effort.

• Worked on developing both strength and flexibility 💪🏼
We need both to keep our joints stable and safe and our muscles working effectively.

• Used the breath 🫁
The breath is a tool to help you notice if you have gone too far in a posture (too much effort) and need to pull back (find ease).

The focus, as always, is not on *looking* good, it’s on *feeling* good. This group of bendy beginners smashed it 👏🏼

I will be standing tall allllll weekend.

MY LUNCH

Do you believe the adage “You are what you eat?”
Since becoming perimenopausal, I do.

Our bodies change dramatically during menopause and eating the rainbow has never been more important 🌈

A well-balanced diet ensures we adjust to hormonal changes whilst helping us maintain bone, brain, heart & gut health.

It all sounds a bit boring - I like crisps and chocolate as much as the next woman (probably more!) and I do still eat them 😋 but I try to eat like this most of the time.

This salad was chucked together from what I had in the fridge 🥗

🌿Beetroot & radish are detoxifying foods and ensure the liver is functioning at optimum levels.

🌿Chickpeas, beetroot and asparagus are prebiotics. Apple cider vinegar in the dressing is a probiotic. Both are essential for a healthy gut and can help with menopausal symptoms such as mood swings and digestive issues.

🌿Eggs contain vitamin D, which helps absorb the right amount of calcium, vital for strong and healthy bones, particularly in menopause when bone density declines. Vitamin D is also needed for muscle mass and a healthy immune system.

🌿Eggs, nuts and seeds contain B Vitamins, which help manage stress, cognitive function and energy levels.

🌿Chickpeas & lettuce contain fibre which helps balance blood sugar levels.

🌿Lettuce also contains potassium, which is needed for cardiovascular health.

If you are unable to take HRT or choose not to, there is still so much you can do to help manage your symptoms. Even if you are taking HRT, approaching your menopause holistically and considering nutrition will have a huge impact.

I am no longer flat lining on a bed of irritability, tiredness and brain fog. My headaches and breast pain are less frequent. And I am more-or-less on top of the school admin, which is miraculous! 🤩
