Folkestone Eye Centre Folkestone Eye Centre is an NHS community-based outpatient clinic. The service is located at our newly renovated premises within Basepoint in Folkestone.

Folkestone Eye Centre is an NHS community-based outpatient clinic, bringing expert eye care closer to patients’ homes. The service is a joint venture owned and run by the partnership of Newton Place Surgery and a group of local expert Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons. We have the most up to date diagnostic and surgical equipment on site, including a state-of-the-art cataract surgery suite. Treatment

🤝MEET THE TEAM: Mr Nick Kopsachilis

Mr Nick Kopsachilis is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with a wide range of experience, specialising in complex cornea, cataract and laser refractive surgery.

🎓He has completed his ophthalmology training in Germany's most prestigious ophthalmic hospitals in Munich and Nuremberg and continued with his subspecialty training in UK's leading Moorfields Eye Hospital and King's College Hospital in London.

Since 2016 he has been leading the Cornea Service at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust and in 2019 he became the Clinical Lead for Ophthalmology. Nick has a keen interest in research and has published more than 70 peer reviewed scientific articles.

He is a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, German Ophthalmic Society and Hellenic Society of Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery.

📅 Appointments are required – we don’t offer walk-in services.

👶 Children under 5 unfortunately can’t be seen.

👩‍⚕️ We don’t have a doctor on site at all times.

📞 You need a GP or Optician referral for specific services like cataracts, wet AMD, dermatology, minor ops/oculoplastic, and HCQ screening.

🤝MEET THE TEAM: Mr. Rashid Zia

🎓Mr. Rashid Zia graduated from King Edward Medical College in 1997 and did his post graduation from Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 2005.

Following this, he then undertook a structured advanced surgical and medical surgical glaucoma fellowship from East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Zia is based in Kent and is the Lead Ophthalmologist at NHS New Hayesbank Ophthalmic Services, NHS Beltinge Eye Clinic and private clinic, Kent Eye Centre.

✅He has performed 35,000 cataract surgeries!

👁️His special interests are: surgical and medical management of complex adult glaucoma including; penetrating and nonpenetrating filtration surgeries, minimally invasive and moderately invasive glaucoma procedures, as well high volume cataract surgery. Mr Zia also has special interests in selective laser trabeculoplasty, trabeculectomy, Preserflo, Ahmad glaucoma valve, Paul glaucoma implant, Istent inject and Other MIGS procedures.

Mr Zia super specialises in medical, laser and surgical management of narrow angles and microphthalmos.

He has a keen interest in teaching and training of glaucoma and cataract surgery. He is also the mentor and trainer of the highly acclaimed "Advanced Adult Glaucoma Fellowship" offered to senior surgeons across the developing world under the auspices of the British Pakistani Ophthalmic society.

Mr Zia has published many peer review publications including; the land mark study on aerosol generation in cataract surgery which was awarded the prestigious "American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Society Award". He has also been an invited speaker in various national and international conferences.

Mr Zia is also the pioneer of providing secondary and tertiary NHS ophthalmic services outside the NHS Trust hospitals in the UK and is one of the largest independent providers of NHS ophthalmic services in the UK. He has successfully set up many state of the art NHS ophthalmic services, which have been commissioned following competitive national biddings.

🤝MEET THE TEAM: Dr. Aine Rice

Dr. Aine Rice is an optometrist with a vast experience within the hospital eye service, academia, and community optometry. She is a member of the College of Optometrists and has been a College Supervisor in the past.

Aine trained at Aston University and undertook her PhD at the University of Bradford followed by a Fellowship at the University of Leeds. She is an independent prescriber, has higher qualifications in glaucoma, and a diploma in Ophthalmology.

Clinically she has worked in paediatrics, medical contact lenses, low vision, glaucoma, keratoconus, AMD and YAG laser; her current main areas of interest include laser and refractive surgery, cataract surgery including premium IOLs and complex dry eye.

🤝MEET THE TEAM: Mr Mike Mota

Mr Mota is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon.

He has expertise in aesthetic eyelid surgery, ptosis surgery, thyroid eye disease, watery eyes, repairing malposition of the eyelid (inward turning and outward turning of eyelid), removal of eyelid lumps and bumps, dry eye, blepharitis, facial palsy, eyelid skin cancer management and reconstruction, and facial dystonia's such as blepharospasm.

🎓He qualified in Medicine from the University of Southampton and also obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of Neurosciences from University College London. Mr Mota did his Ophthalmology and initial Oculoplastic advanced training at Oxford, followed by a Fellowship in Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery at Leicester. Mr Mota was appointed in 2017 as a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic/Orbital Surgeon at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Trust (EKHUFT).

Mr Mota was the lead for the Urgent Eye service at East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust from 2017 to 2023. He is a clinical supervisor for eye doctors in training, and teaches GPs and optometrists in the management of Urgent Eye conditions. Mr Mota runs a joint Facial and Oculoplastic clinic with his Maxillo-Facial Consultant colleague (Mr Kemal Tekeli) at EKHUFT and together they provide a highly specialised service for patients requiring complex care to the face and eye region.

Mr Mota also works alongside his Ears Nose & Throat Consultant colleague (Mr Bertram Fu) providing a lacrimal service (watery eye clinic) at EKHUFT.

He has published and presented internationally in the field of Oculoplastics and is a member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society (BOPSS).

AJ is our expert Principal Optometrist with a wealth of experience since graduating in 2011. With several postgraduate qualifications from renowned institutions like Cardiff University, Hertfordshire University, and Moorfields Eye Hospital, AJ specialises in general ophthalmology, glaucoma, and cataract clinics.

One of his standout qualifications is the highly sought-after DipTp(IP) in therapeutic prescribing, a skillset not many clinicians have. In addition to his clinical work, AJ also serves as an OSCE examiner and College assessor, evaluating colleagues and students who are training, yet to qualify, or looking to obtain additional postgraduate qualifications.
