FORM OVER BRAWN

I maybe a PT and been training for decades, but you’re never too old or knowledgable to learn. And this is a great example. I’m not a fan of hack squats but I’ve been trying to lean into them (no pun intended) and improve.

In the first video is where I was: feet too high, wrong footwear, footplate not right for me and, critically only coming halfway down - likely owing to concern to get back up.

In the second, my feet are much lower down, I’ve got flatter / less springy footwear, the footplate is angled better and, critically, I’m coming right down for a full stretch…more knee bend = more quads. The weight is completely dropped to get the form right, THEN we build up.

Much better, feels better (or worse if you’re taking into account how f&@*ed my quads feel now!) and has reset my thinking on this piece of kit.

Great article from in yesterday’s magazine regarding five weightlifting myths, debunked. Covering myths such as ‘it won’t help you lose weight’ ‘you need to eat loads of protein’ ‘you have to lift as heavy as possible’ ‘you need to train every day’ and ‘if it hurts that’s good’ she simply breaks these down supported by industry experts. Stuff I tell my clients all the time - very much worth a read!
