July is UV Safety Month, and that includes your eyes!

UV rays can cause long-term damage to your eyes – not just your skin.

Here is one of our young customers who takes choosing his glasses and sunglasses very seriously, and makes full use of the opportunity to have a mirrored lens for his shades!

BUT - sunglasses are not just about looking cool. More than half of parents do not ensure their children wear sunglasses with UV protection when spending time outside in the sun. Children’s eyes are more sensitive to the sun than adults', so if you’ve got your sunglasses on, make sure they do too!

What about a cap or sunhat? While a wide-brimmed hat does provide some protection, combining it with UV-protective sunglasses can reduce UV radiation from reaching your child’s eyes by up to 98%.

All children are entitled to free NHS eye tests, and we stock fun, durable, child-friendly frames.

How We Help Manage Your Child’s Myopia

If your child is diagnosed with short-sightedness (myopia), our team may recommend a tailored myopia management plan. These treatments won’t stop myopia altogether, but they can slow down its progression, which might mean:

- Lighter, thinner glasses in future
- Less dependence on vision correction
- A reduced risk of serious eye conditions later in life

Our Optometrists lead the discussion with you during the eye exam. If management is suitable, we will talk you through the different lens options, including glasses and contact lenses specifically designed for myopia management.

We also offer monthly payment plans to make it more affordable.

Your child’s vision will be regularly monitored, so we can adjust the treatment as needed and track its progress over time.

We allow up to 45 minutes for a private Eye Folk eye examination, so what can you expect?

Our thorough examination covers two key aspects: your eye health and your vision.

👁️ Eye Health Check:

Our team selects specific tests tailored to your unique needs.

- The Auto-Refractor, where you’ll look at a distant image (like a hot air balloon) to estimate your prescription.
- The Non-Contact Tonometer, a gentle puff of air into your eyes to check eye pressure.
- The Digital Retinal Photography captures a detailed image of your eyes with a quick flash, helping us assess overall eye health.
- The Visual Field Test allows us to examine your field of view.

No need to worry about discomfort; these tests are painless and take just a few minutes.

They play a crucial role in detecting issues like dry eyes, cataracts, glaucoma, and even certain general health conditions like diabetes.

We also include an OCT scan in all our private eye test appointments (add one to an NHS appointment for £35). This advanced scan provides an even more detailed view of your eye, helping us spot any underlying health conditions.

👓 Vision Check:

For most people, we use the familiar letter chart, asking you to read down the letters as they get smaller to assess your vision and refine your prescription.

We've also got alternative charts and tools for children, and others who may need them.
