eBike-motor longevity Tip of the Week Number 9: One drop of water!

Chronic motor failure is often a cascading event! Starting slowly and usually taking 3 to 5 months, depending on your average mileage.

A small issue can lead to major problems if left unchecked. Here’s a common real-world scenario:

1. Your eBike motor gets wet, maybe from deep water fording, a post-ride wash, or while it’s strapped to the car rack and transported on wet roads.

2. You store it away, but a tiny bit of water finds its way into a motor bearing.

3. Over time, rust begins to form between the ball bearings and the race. This is the beginning of the end.

4. Weeks (or months) later, you roll the bike backwards and may feel the crank is stuck, or a click as it releases… a subtle but serious warning sign. At this point, corrosion has started damaging the bearing surface.

5. From here, each ride adds to the wear. The ball bearings degrade, and the pitted race accelerates damage.

6. Due to their small size, the ball bearings experience accelerated wear. This wear introduces play that can unseat the bearing seals, permitting water and or contaminants to enter the motor causing premature failure.

Tip: Keep your eBike dry and regularly inspected, especially after wet conditions.

eBike-motor longevity Tip of the week Number 8: When should you stop pedalling!

You need to familiarise yourself of what is normal - This is best done when your motor is new or has been recently overhauled.

First remove the chain from the chainring and rotate the pedals forwards for several rotations, then backwards for several rotations. Do this by hand.
By removing the chain from the chainring, you will only be feeling and hearing the motor without the derailleur or chain noise interference.

Once you are familiar with how your motor should sound and feel, you should be able to recognise any change.

Check your motor this way every 2 to 3 months. Any change – call or email us. This could flag chronic bearing failure creeping in as in the photo. (As soon as a bearing starts to wear, it will begin to let more water past it’s seals signifying the beginning of the end for a motor).

If you can diagnose potential failure early, you could save yourself a fortune on a cheap repair instead of a new motor!

eBike-motor longevity Tip of the week Number 7: If water gets into my motor, will it dry out?

Although some motors do have small venting membranes, these are primarily designed to allow for pressure changes, humidity and condensation to escape, not additional water that has made its way into the motor through the bearings or seals.
All motors have an IP rating (ingress protection) with most of them indicating they are splash and dust proof, not waterproof or able to withstand pressure washing, deep-water fording or submersion.
If a motor has only suffered a very small amount of water ingress and is fitted with a venting membrane, they can dry out to a degree naturally if left in a warm dry environment, but this can take a considerable amount of time.
The problem with drying a motor out is that the water will have entered through the bearing seals meaning that any water trapped inside the bearing will already have started to damage the bearing through corrosion.
If you suspect your motor has water ingress, we advise not to turn your bike upside down for cleaning, this may help protect the printed circuit board (PCB) if water has not reached it already. Ideally, don’t even turn your motor on until it has been inspected and dried.
If water has started corrosion on the PCB, drying the motor may not help because the corrosion will continue. The PCB should be removed, thoroughly dried and then treated with a dielectric corrosion inhibitor.
Once water is inside, damage can cascade very quickly so if in doubt contact us (01425 656 656, enquiries@ebikemotorcentre.com ) or your local bike shop.

eBike-motor longevity Tip of the week Number 6: When Pedal strikes again!

This is where your crank arm/pedal makes hard contact with the ground or an obstacle (rocks, tree roots, kerb stones etc) whilst in motion. The impact force transmits through to the motor housing causing mechanical stress and this could manifest into motor damage or even failure. This can snap drive belts, shear teeth from plastic drive gears and even damage steel gears requiring replacement by us.

To reduce the chances of this happening, ensure your suspension ride-height (Sag) is correct and regularly checked.

You may want to look at reducing the length of your crank-arms or even smaller pedals!

There are loads of riding techniques forums and videos to teach you how to ride safely on rough terrain and ensure you minimise the risk of this occurring.

If you are unlucky and do cause damage to your motor, please contact us immediately and we can endeavour to repair it for you.

eBike-motor longevity Tip of the week Number 5:

Bearings do not usually creak!

When people bring their bikes to us with creaking or cracking noises, often thinking it's from their motor. Often it's from the bike itself. Here are the most common reasons we have found for noises blamed on the motor:
· Motor bolts are loose (not quite tight enough).
· Chainring to spider bolts are loose (not quite tight enough).
· Crank arm to crank joint creaking.
· Pedal click or creak.
· Seat post creaking
· Rear suspension linkages creaking
· Loose spokes in the rear wheel or rear wheel spindle creaking, freehub clicking or creaking or cassette clicking or creaking.

If you hear a creaking noise when cycling, go around your bike with the correct torque tools and recommended settings (normally written on the bolts themselves in Nm).

If in doubt, ask your local bike shop to do this as part of its service offerings.

Sustainability - 53 Tons saved from landfill!

Motor Centre , sustainability is not a side note; it is central to everything we do. From our workshop practices to the products we offer, we are committed to reducing environmental impact and supporting a circular economy wherever possible.

We do not just sell eBike motor parts; we give them a second life. We repair, refurbish, and resell used motors and components, helping to extend the lifespan of valuable materials, reduce waste, and keep more bikes on the road and out of landfill sites.

Over the last 6 years, we have repaired around 15,000 motors, meaning 15,000 eBikes were put back on the road without the need for a new motor! Just these 15,000 motors equate to 53 Tons or over 1.5 Olympic swimming pools' of material saved from landfill.

To put this into context, the image of our Skip shows our total metal waste after 6 years, and of course, we will have this recycled responsibly.

We are honest about the realities, too - eBikes' are not 100% sustainable. Lithium and cobalt mining for batteries has a cost. But compared to cars, they are a massive leap forward. They represent a cleaner, more efficient way to travel, and we are here to help make that option more accessible, more affordable, and environmentally smarter.

What We’re Doing Behind the Scenes:

⚪ We offer a bespoke repair service for broken or worn eBike motors
⚪ We refurbish used eBike motors and parts to extend their lifespan and reduce cost and waste
⚪ Our packaging is plastic-free whenever possible (only reused where necessary and often recycled)
⚪ The workshops have extremely low power consumption using all LED lighting and little else.
⚪ Components are mostly cleaned using compressed air instead of chemicals.
⚪ We are exploring the ability to offer more second-hand motor options in the future.

Choose repair over replacement to build smarter, cleaner, longer-lasting transport together

eBike-motor longevity Tip of the week Number 2:

How do you clean your eBike after a ride?

After a ride, it’s tempting to blast your eBike clean, but here’s the golden rule: keep high-pressure water away from the motor—especially around the crankshaft. eBike motors, wheel bearings, and frame bearings aren’t built with heavy-duty seals like motorbikes, so water can sneak in and cause costly damage.

Best practice:

Skip the pressure washer entirely if possible.

If you must use one, choose the gentlest “prewash/foam” or rinse setting—never a hard jet.

Always clean and dry your eBike upright—never sideways or upside down.

Treat your eBike gently now, and your motor will thank you later with years of smooth riding.

We are starting a series of helpful tips to help keep your eBike on the road.

Do you take your eBike on a roof/towbar carrier?

Water ingress is the killer - atomised rainwater travelling at 70mph will find its way into your motor. We suggest you cover up the motor with a plastic bag and zip ties for the journey, or an eBike motor cover.
