Parents, please read!

🎃Before you head out for trick-or-treating Friday!remember:

🍬Hard-boiled sweets, lollipops, small round chocolates, and marshmallows are not safe for young children - they can be a choking hazard.

⚠️ After collecting sweets and chocolate, make sure you check your child’s haul before they dig in!

👻 Halloween is almost here!

🎃 We can’t wait to see all the little (and big!) ones dressed up in their spooky, sparkly, and scary costumes!

‼️ But while the costumes are fun and cute PLEASE remember, most are mass-produced and not always made with safety in mind. Here are a few tips to help keep your little ghouls and goblins safe this Halloween:

⚠️ Keep costumes and kids well away from open flames. Use battery-operated candles instead of real ones for pumpkins or decorations.

⚠️ Try to buy from reputable brands and look for the CE, UKCA or UKNI mark to make sure costumes meet safety standards.

⚠️ Add an extra layer underneath costumes for warmth and protection.

⚠️ Teach children to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their costume ever catches fire it can make all the difference.

😃 Most importantly - have fun and stay safe!

🧙‍♀️ Are you going trick-or-treating this year? Tell us what your little one will be dressed as in the comments!

❓ If you did some first aid in your antenatal classes is it time for a refresher?

👶🏼 What did you think about when you were expecting your little one?

🍼 The birth of your baby, coming home from hospital, feeding, sleep (or lack of!) and how to tell if your newborn is breathing normally.

🌼 Daisy First Aid are proud to work with a number of fantastic antenatal providers all over the UK to deliver first aid classes to expectant parents.

👶🏽 If you did a first aid class when you were expecting your baby it’s likely you were focused on what to do when your little one was first born.

🥦 Fast-forward to when baby is 5 months and weaning is on the horizon. Or to when your little one is on the move and putting everything in their mouth. What about when they’re learning to walk? And climb?

🪀 As your baby grows so too do the challenges as a parent and the hazards change.

🌼 We recommend annual first aid refreshers to absolutely everyone we teach to keep the potentially life-saving skills fresh in your mind.

🚨 With knowledge comes confidence and calm in an emergency.

🌼 Search ‘Daisy First Aid’ and find your local trainer and book a class today. We guarantee you won’t regret it.

‼️ 46 of those cases is due to hot drinks spills.

☕️ A hot drink can seriously burn a child 15 minutes after it’s been made. It’s important to keep hot drinks well out of reach of little ones and remind any guests visiting of how important this is too.
• Across the board (children & adults) scalds are the most common cause of burn injury, representing 43% of acute burn injuries
• It is estimated that on average 110 children per day are seen in emergency departments with burn injuries – 46 as a result of a hot cup of tea or coffee spill
• The majority of burn injuries occurring to children are between 3 and 6pm
• The most common place of injury for children is in the home – 49% of whom are burnt in the kitchen
• The average cost to the NHS for a major burn is £168,155
• Burn cooling is critical in the initial first aid response to injury – applying cool running water for 20 minutes is considered best practice.
If your child does accidentally get burned the first aid treatment they receive could make all the difference to their recovery.

❗️ Remember:

1 – remove any clothing (including their nappy as this will retain the hot liquid and potentially cause more harm)
2 – cool the burn for 20 mins under cool running
3 – cover the burn with cling film

👨🏼‍⚕️ Then take the child to be seen by a medical professional.

👧🏾 Children’s skin burns at a lower temperature to ours so it’s so important to take extra care when there are little ones around.

🥐 An extra informative brunch at Su Studio last month! We had both the lovely and sharing their weaning guidance and baby first aid essentials.

Highly, highly recommend getting to a baby first aid session with Lindsay - or even building your own session with Lindsay and a group of Mum friends! She’s absolutely fab, and so incredibly knowledgeable.

How do you feel about baby first aid? Let us know in the comments! 👶🏼 Perhaps we look to do another brunch with a mini first aid session woven in 💛

❗️ According to research carried out by Baby to Toddler 83% of parents wouldn’t know what to do if their child swallowed something they shouldn’t have.

❓ Are you aware of all the hazards around your home? Did you know that suspected poisoning is one of the most common reasons young children are taken to A&E?

👦🏻 All children go through a phase of putting everything in their mouths. It can be very frustrating but it’s completely normal and it is a way for them to explore the world around them.

👶🏾 Babies have more nerve endings per square millimetre in their mouths than on any other part of their body so without refined fine motor skills, they can find out more about something by putting in their mouth! But this phase does put them at risk of choking and swallowing something potentially harmful.

🌼 In our parent first aid classes not only do we teach parents what to do if they suspect their child has swallowed something they shouldn’t have, but we also have in-depth discussions about how to prevent accidental poisoning and what to be aware of around the home.

🌼 Our classes provide confidence and awareness to parents in a wide range of topics including accidental poisoning.

⛑️ Little heads, big adventures!

🚲 We all want our kids to explore, have fun and feel free — but safety has to come first. A properly fitted helmet can cut the risk of serious head injury by more than half.

🛴 That’s why helmet habits should start young and the best way to make them stick? Let your children see you wearing one too. Kids copy what we do, not just what we say.

👉 Take our quick quiz and see how many you got correct and share this with parents who might like a reminder of the importance of helmet safety.

🙌 Let’s raise children that see helmets as normal, not optional.

🥱 Running on empty? You’re not alone. Sleep deprivation with a new baby is real (and brutal) — but there are ways to cope

😴 Nap/rest when you can (the washing can wait).
👥 Share night shifts with a partner.
💤 Sacrifice evening Netflix time once in a while to catch up on sleep.
🛌 Safe co-sleeping can help you rest more.
🍒 Fuel your body — hydrate & eat balanced meals (not just coffee + biscuits!).
😮‍💨 Fresh air & gentle movement gives an instant energy boost.
🧘🏼‍♀️ Mindfulness, breathing, or even 5 mins of calm can reset your nervous system.
♥️ Be kind to yourself — this phase will pass.

🤩 Extra tips:
📱 Put your phone down before bed (blue light messes with sleep).
💤 Create a calming bedtime ritual for you, not just baby.
📒 Keep a notebook by the bed — jotting worries down can stop that 3am spiral.

♥️ You’ve got this. One day at a time.

🧒🏻Do you have a little one who has started or returned to school? Have you heard of ‘after school restraint collapse’? If not then read on…

😊 You may wonder why your child’s teacher talks about how lovely they are during the school day but once they are with you it’s another story...

😭 They may have meltdowns with temper tantrums or they may be withdrawn and refuse to engage with you for a while after school. This is actually really common behaviour in children under 12.

✏️ Parenting expert Sarah Ockwell-Smith says “They have spent all day at school holding in frustration, fear, anxiety, anger and other uncomfortable emotions, because they know that it is “naughty” to let them out at school. When they get home to you, however, things are entirely different.”

♥️ Experts say this shows that your children feel safe enough with you and loved enough to let out all of their bottled up emotions. So really it’s a sign of your great parenting!

❓ How can we deal with it?

😶 Try not to ask lots of questions as soon as they come out of school.

🍌 Give them a snack – they’re likely to be tired and hungry so a bit of quiet time and some food is a good idea.

🚶 Once they’ve had a snack, exercise can really help them to blow off steam if they need to.

😭 If they are upset or having a meltdown try to keep calm, acknowledge their feelings and let them know you are there for them.

♥️ And remember, it’s totally normal and you are not alone.
