Observation is a form of love. You have to watch people closely to see the funny side of their desperation. The beauty of the British character lies in its smallness. We don't have grand tragedies; we have slightly disappointing tupperware parties and arguments about the correct way to fold a map. Giving a voice to the woman in the beret, or the waitress with the bad back, was a way of documenting the invisible lives that make up the country.

Specifics matter. It isn't just a soup; it's a "packet-a-soup." It isn't just a shop; it's "C&A." The brand names, the textures, the fabrics—these are the anchors of reality. The piano was a shield and a weapon. A song can smuggle in a lot of satire if the tune is catchy enough. "The Ballad of Barry and Freda" isn't just a dirty song; it's a tragedy about libido and lethargy.

Warmth doesn't mean soft. You can be incredibly sharp while holding a cup of tea. I wanted to show that the mundane is actually magnificent, if you just look at it from a slightly different angle.
