Even our routine treatments are designed with appearance in mind. We don't use mercury amalgam fillings because we understand the concerns people have about having toxic metals placed in their mouths; so we choose alternatives. We go further than this - we use special techniques to protect you as much as possible from swallowing or breathing-in mercury during the removal of old fillings. We respect your lifestyle and ethical wishes. We combine conventional and complimentary treatments. We try to look after you in a way that will avoid the need to use potent medicines but will give you realistic advice if, for example, we feel you might benefit from the use of an antibiotic. We take allergies and sensitivities seriously. We try to avoid materials that might cause a reaction and listen carefully to any reports of experiences you have had in the past. We help you to help yourself. We provide a full range of preventive treatments backed up with extensive advice on home care. We have time for you. The appointments you are offered may be longer than you have previously been used to. This is to let us care for you without rush or pressure. We care about your well-being. You may think of a dental practice just as somewhere to go for repair to a broken or diseased tooth. At Avenue Road Dental Practice we try to keep our patients healthy in an effort to avoid frequent treatments. We do this by concentrating on prevention. We carefully explain the principles of home care - not only cleaning but also the implications different lifestyles and diets have on oral health. The dentist begins each regular examination with a thorough look at the soft tissues of your mouth. We don't want to miss conditions like ulcers, thrush or early mouth cancer. Then the dentist examines your gums; the foundations on which your teeth are built. The teeth themselves come last. When early problems are diagnosed you will often be given instruction in how to prevent the condition getting worse. In this way we can frequently avoid the need to drill cavities. If treatment does become necessary we may recommend complimentary therapies to help your body cope. Examples of these may be arnica before and after potentially stressful procedures, aloe vera to aid healing or selenium and zinc to act as antioxidants and boost the immune system before the removal of mercury amalgam fillings. We sometimes use electronic or pulsating light stimulation to aid
healing after surgical procedures. We may advise a visit to a chiropractor for help in treating jaw misalignment or joint problems. As well as natural remedies we will not hesitate to recommend conventional medicines where we feel they would be appropriate. Members of our dental team are interested in care. We have all been medical or dental patients ourselves from time to time and want to treat others in the way we would like to be treated ourselves. It is with devastating sadness that we announce the heart breaking passing of our BDS Dentist, Dr Philip Lewis MBE – Past President of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, and a distinguished figure in dentistry and raising awareness for head and neck cancers.

Philip, who was involved with the MCF charity since its inception, devoted his career to highlighting the importance of checking for mouth cancers and was continuing to educate the dental profession and the general public right up until a couple of weeks ago.

Philip leaves behind a legacy of excellence, integrity, and dedication. He is survived by his family, friends, and countless colleagues whose lives he touched. Philip’s memory will forever inspire those who knew him and those who continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in raising awareness of mouth cancer. Our thoughts are with our fellow MCF Ambassadors, his wife Joy, daughter Chloe and whole family at this time.

Rest in peace, Dr Philip Lewis MBE. You will be greatly missed.

Improve the appearance of misshaped or damaged teeth to achieve a beautiful smile with the help of our professional dental team, trained in composite bonding.

Small amounts of colour-matched filling material are added to the teeth to cover up imperfections or improve the shape of the . Usually no injection is required, as very little drilling is necessary.

The surfaces of the teeth to be bonded are roughened with fine diamond polishers or by gentle sand-blasting. Adhesives are applied and the teeth built up. This technique is often used in conjunction with cosmetic re-contouring to improve the shape of the edges of the teeth.
