Understanding Tinnitus: The Importance of Hearing Health and Professional Support

Tinnitus affects millions of people in the UK, often presenting as ringing, buzzing, whooshing, or humming sounds that have no external source. For some, these noises are mild and manageable, but for others, tinnitus can affect concentration, sleep, and emotional wellbeing. While common, tinnitus should never be ignored.

At Frinton Eye and Hearing Centre, our experienced hearing care specialists are equipped with advanced technology and clinical expertise to assess and support patients affected by tinnitus. A detailed hearing assessment is the essential first step toward relief.

What Causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a symptom rather than a condition itself, and may be associated with:

• Age-related or noise-induced hearing loss
• Wax blockages
• Middle ear issues
• Stress and anxiety
• Certain medications
• Circulatory or neurological factors

Identifying the underlying cause helps determine the best way to manage symptoms.

Advanced Solutions for Tinnitus Relief

Once we complete a thorough diagnostic examination, we can tailor a management plan to your needs. One of the most effective modern solutions is the integration of tinnitus therapy features within the latest generation of hearing aids.

Today’s premium hearing aids offer:

• Specialist tinnitus masking and relief programs
• Built-in sound therapy modules (calming tones, white noise, and nature sounds)
• Improved sound clarity to reduce the brain’s focus on tinnitus
• Companion smartphone apps for personalised adjustments throughout the day

These technologies not only address hearing loss but also play a critical role in easing tinnitus perception and improving daily comfort.

We also provide guidance on relaxation strategies, environmental sound enrichment, and other supportive approaches designed to help you regain control.

Why Early Assessment Matters

When tinnitus is addressed promptly, there is often a greater opportunity to reduce its impact. Professional assessment ensures you are not coping with symptoms alone—and that any related hearing concerns are properly managed.

Hearing Well This Christmas: Why It Matters More Than Ever
By the Frinton Eye & Hearing Centre Clinical Team

The Christmas season is a time defined by connection. It is the sound of familiar voices around the dinner table, the laughter of grandchildren, the rustle of wrapping paper, and the quiet comfort of conversation with friends you may not have seen for months. These are moments that matter, and hearing them clearly makes all the difference.

For many people, even mild hearing loss can turn these festive occasions into a source of stress or isolation. Mishearing things in a noisy room, withdrawing from group conversations, or simply feeling fatigued from the effort of listening can overshadow what should be a joyful time. Addressing hearing challenges ahead of the holidays can transform the experience—for you and for those who care about you.

Why hearing well is essential at Christmas
1. Meaningful communication
Christmas gatherings often involve group conversations, background music, and lots of simultaneous noise. Good hearing allows you to stay engaged without strain.
2. Emotional connection
Hearing a loved one’s voice clearly strengthens bonds and supports emotional wellbeing—especially important during the holidays.
3. Awareness and confidence
From hearing the doorbell to participating in games and family traditions, clear hearing preserves independence and confidence.
4. Overall health benefits
Untreated hearing loss is linked to cognitive load, social withdrawal, and increased fatigue. Managing it early delivers long-term health advantages.

A timely opportunity before Christmas

If you have been considering a hearing test, now is the ideal moment. Our clinical team can provide a comprehensive assessment and, for those who need them, we can still arrange for hearing aids to be made in time for Christmas—ensuring you are ready to enjoy every part of the festive period.

Whether you have noticed changes in your hearing or simply want reassurance, we encourage you to book without delay. Early testing gives you clear answers and, if needed, enough time to fit and fine-tune hearing devices before the celebrations begin.

Cataracts and Their Impact on Vision

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, a transparent structure responsible for focusing light onto the retina. When this lens becomes opaque, light cannot pass through clearly, resulting in blurred, dim, or distorted vision. Cataracts are one of the leading causes of reversible visual impairment worldwide and most commonly develop with age, although they may also arise from trauma, medical conditions, certain medications, or congenital factors.

How Cataracts Affect Vision

Cataracts develop gradually, and symptoms often begin subtly before becoming more noticeable. Common visual effects include:
• Blurry or cloudy vision that does not improve with glasses
• Increased sensitivity to glare, particularly from headlights at night
• Difficulty with night vision and low-light environments
• Faded or dull colour perception
• Halos around lights
• Frequent changes in prescription for glasses or contact lenses

As the cataract progresses, everyday tasks such as driving, reading, and recognising faces may become increasingly challenging.

Types of Cataracts

Different cataracts affect vision in distinct ways:

Nuclear Sclerotic Cataracts
• Form in the centre of the lens
• Common with ageing
• Typically worsen distance vision and cause gradual lens yellowing

Cortical Cataracts
• Develop in the outer edges of the lens
• Create spoke-like opacities
• Lead to glare and reduced contrast sensitivity

Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts (PSC)
• Form at the back of the lens
• Progress more quickly
• Interfere with reading vision and bright-light conditions

Congenital Cataracts
• Present at birth or develop early in childhood
• May require early assessment and treatment to support normal visual development

Diagnosis and Management

A comprehensive eye examination is essential for accurate diagnosis. This assessment typically includes:
• Vision and refraction testing
• Examination of the lens using slit-lamp biomicroscopy
• Retinal evaluation to rule out other causes of visual impairment

In early stages, improved lighting and updated glasses may help. However, surgery is the only definitive treatment when the cataract begins to interfere with daily activities. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures in modern medicine, involving removal of the cloudy lens and implantation of a clear artificial lens.

Protecting Eye Health

Regular eye examinations are vital for early detection and ongoing management of cataracts and other eye conditions. Early diagnosis allows timely intervention and supports long-term visual wellbeing.
