HYPNOTHERAPY MYTHS
There are so many misconceptions people have about hypnosis mostly from associating with stage hypnosis. Here are the questions I get asked the most ....
1. Will I be asleep?
No, it's the opposite you're in a heightened state of awareness. In hypnosis you are actually processing your thoughts through a deep, focused awareness. A high level of alpha waves on an EEG show that a hypnotised person is awake, alert and very responsive.
2. Will I get stuck in hypnosis?
In the history of hypnotherapy, there's no report that anyone has been stuck in hypnosis
3. I can't relax so it won't work.
You don't need to be relaxed to go into hypnosis. In reality, most of you have experienced a state of mild hypnosis. For example, when you drive a familiar route and you think to yourself "I can't recall going through those last set of lights" that’s a mild state of hypnosis. Your subconscious is taking care of all the mechanical aspects of driving while you conscious mind is free to float around.
4. Is it some form of mind control?
No. People are perfectly capable of saying no or terminating hypnosis.
5. You've never experienced hypnosis.
As mentioned above people can go in and out of trance everyday. Another example is through meditation or when you're engrossed in music or a hobby.
6. Only the mentally weak can be hypnotised.
No. In fact, the exact reverse is probably more true. The higher your intelligence and the stronger your self-control, the more easily you are hypnotised.
7. Will I be made to say something against my will?
As you are in a heightened state of awareness, you still make the decisions on what you tell me. However holding back just means the problems will continue to exist. You do all the work we are just here to guide you.
