This month, Canteen went alfresco in Victoria Park Cafe and truly pulled out all the stops. Long tables stretched beneath the trees as 222 meals were shared, a delicious feast that brought together growers, makers, producers, cooks, volunteers and neighbours from every corner of Frome.
From potatoes grown by more than a hundred families (organised by Kerry Frome Seed Library ) to surplus food rescued through Terri Community Fridge: Frome , this was a beautiful patchwork of community working hand in hand. Frome at its very best.💚
With even the weather collaborating, Canteen's average spend of £10.83 meant many meals were partly subsidised, with some paid forward so that others could eat for less, or for free. That’s the power of pay-what-you-can: ensuring nutritious food is accessible to all.
And while this may feel special, it’s part of a long tradition. In Spain and so many other cultures, regular community meals weave people together, creating belonging and resilience. When we grow food together, share skills and eat side by side, we’re reminded that food nourishes more than our bodies, it strengthens joy, resilience, and connection.
Here in Frome, that spirit is alive and thriving. Hyper-local, affordable, nourishing food - shared in good company. 🌍💚
Huge thanks to the folks Food Frome Network and every amazing organisation who pitched in to make this Canteen such an incredible event.
