Embodiment in art is the representation of the human body in art, and how the body is used to convey ideas, emotions, and narratives. I created this art work as an experiential part of my play therapy course and realised that I have many scars. It’s o.k though, because I accept them as a part of me. The overwhelming feeling I got from doing this piece was that - I want to live!

Endings can mean new beginnings. I did this sand tray with my supervisor after handing in my notice to a job I had maintained for 9 years! I realised that although it was a stable job I had felt trapped by it. Moving onto new beginnings - the bright sparkles and the mess - the feeling of being scared in your tummy - the possibility of creativity! Feeling overwhelmed by the change with my head in the sand! My supervisor asked me whether there was anything I would like to change after talking through this sand tray - and I moved my figure a little out of the sand. It was good to express the whole picture - something that words just can’t do - and I felt a little less overwhelmed and a little more positive. So here is to new beginnings and the power of the sand tray!

What is it about working with clay? On my course with PTUK I found that I revealed a part of myself that I unconsciously wanted to remain hidden. It is through the process of manipulating the material that clay finds those parts - unidentified and unexpressed feelings and emotions. When children use clay in a play therapy session it is often in silence and can be powerful and profound because ‘worries that previously have caused inner concern or turmoil are given shape and form in the outer world.’ (Lynne Souter-Anderson). When problems are hard to put into words the load can be lightened! 🎈

The PTUK post grad diploma in Play Therapy is an experiential course which I felt nervous about! However, the experience of delving deep into my unconscious using sandplay therapy will stay with me forever. After just one session working with the sand tray and symbols I felt I got further than any talking therapies have ever taken me! This is because ‘more brain centres light up in response to metaphor than any other form of human communication about emotions, forming new neural pathways’ (Levin, F 1997 and Modell, A.H 1997). I am now a firm believer in the power of therapeutic sandplay and I’m so glad I experienced it for myself in order to gain the insight to support others.
