Concern among parents as Frome birthing centre stays closed until October

Local mothers and families have met with birthing groups and charities, representatives from Frome Birthing Centre and the Royal United Hospital in Bath, and town councillors, to discuss the impact on local women of Frome’s birthing facility remaining closed until at least October.

Home and community births in Frome have been suspended since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the town’s birthing centre was closed. Now, due to national staff shortages among midwives, the centre has remained temporarily shut and is not due to re-open until October.

Local women met with staff from Frome Birthing Centre and local childbirth groups at a meeting held at the town hall on Friday 2nd September. Then last week, Frome Town Council invited the groups to a council meeting where they could talk about the frustration and anxiety which is felt among expectant parents who are unable to give birth in the community.

Breastfeeding tips gathered from Great Expectations, A pregnancy peer support group that Kaz runs.
Is there anything you'd like to add?

Breastfeeding can be hard work in the beginning, you need patience, knowledge, support, determination and above everything else confidence.

Be prepared for it to be challenging in the first few weeks.

You need to take care of yourself, and your breasts. Get plenty of air to them do not let them become too damp.

Feed in the first hour if you can when the babies suckle reflex is at its strongest.

In the antenatal period Find a midwife that is supportive of your feeding choices. Seek her out if you were having difficulties afterwards.

Go to and get your partner to come along to an antenatal breastfeeding class so that you are both informed, educated and that you have a realistic expectations for breastfeeding.

Don't be afraid to ask for help and support.

Attend a breastfeeding group when you are pregnant, make supportive friends! This can help to normalise breastfeeding and you know where to go when you need support.

Talk to other mums about clothes that can make breastfeeding easier. You don't have to spend a lot.

Remember that breastfeeding takes many forms, it may not be just at the breast.

You know your baby best and it is your responsibility to make it from decisions on behalf of your baby. It's OK to request a second opinion.
