As seen in our Trust Newsletter 💚. Colleagues at Frome Community Hospital have launched a new ‘Earthly Ideas’ initiative, hoping to make the hospital a more sustainable place to work, stay, or visit.
Each month focuses on a new theme, starting with ‘The Big Seed Giveaway’ in March, followed by a clothes swap event taking place on Wednesday 26 April. All the themes promote and encourage more sustainable ways of living and working, which colleagues can use both during work hours and once they get home.
Senior administrator at the hospital, Melissa Book, came up with the idea for the 12-month initiative. She said: “Our matron, Pete Harvey, came up with the initial idea of seeing what we could do to become a more sustainable hospital. I wanted to make it relevant to colleagues, and involve as many of us as possible, as well as local sustainability groups, which is how ‘Earthly Ideas’ was created.
“We started off with a seed giveaway in March, which was a huge success and has been enjoyed by many visitors over the past few weeks. This month we have a clothes swap for colleagues to get involved with, and next month we hope to remove the majority of plastic cups, encourage colleagues to reduce their use of gloves and aprons (where appropriate!), and introduce Nick Burns-Cox’s PIP project across relevant departments.
“None of this would be possible without the support from others. We’ve got strong ties with Frome Medical Practice, who are doing an amazing job with their own sustainability initiatives. We’re hoping to continue to build on this, making the whole campus more sustainable. We’ve also worked closely with our sustainability lead Richard Harper, and sustainability and environmental adviser Jackie Benham, to ensure the initiatives are going to have the right impact, and look forward to attending the Sustainability Summit taking place at Musgrove Park on 27 April.
“I would encourage any colleagues to consider thinking about how you could make your department or area more sustainable – hopefully we have inspired a few to follow what we’ve been up to at Frome!”
