Important Announcement

From 1 March 2026 the law, in Scotland, changed regarding the rights to burial. In particular, the purchase of a new lair from this date. Burial rights will be valid for 25 years.

After the initial 25 years, the owner of the burial rights can apply for a 10 year extension, which can be renewed indefinitely. The fee for this has yet to be determined.

Burial authorities must contact lair holders at least 3 months before the 25 year expiry to explain the renewal options available.

If the grave/lair is not renewed, the burial rights will expire, meaning no further burials can take place and no memorials or headstones can be added.

It is important to ensure your contact details are updated when your circumstances change.

This burial law does not apply to grave purchases before this date.

Should you have any queries, feel free to call or pop in to discuss.
