In Scotland, hydrolysis has been given the green light under new Scottish Government regulations and will be legalised from 2 March.

Although an operational hydrolysis facility is not yet open in Scotland, this development means families in Northumberland and North Tyneside will have potential future access to hydrolysis facilities within around an hour’s travel, offering another accessible funeral option alongside burial and cremation.

The Scottish Government has given the green light for hydrolysis to become a legal funeral option from 2 March.

Although there is not yet an operational hydrolysis facility in Scotland, this new regulation means families will eventually have another funeral choice, alongside burial and cremation. We welcome any change that gives families more choice when planning a funeral for their loved one.
