Here is our Nat in her element helping a wee butterfly that was struggling outside the clinic the other day.

Here is what to do if you see one struggling

🤲Handle with care: Never touch a butterfly’s wings, as the natural oils on your fingers can dissolve the protective scales, which can prevent the butterfly from flying properly.

🏡Place the butterfly in a sheltered spot.

🍌Provide a food source if it is not moving. Sugary liquid from rotting fruit like bananas.

🌞If you have nowhere suitable for a butterfly to spend the rest of the winter, try to keep it in a relatively cool spot until the weather improves. Release it on a warm and dry day and it can fly away and find another suitable roosting place.🤍

Today marks 20 years since Donald left His Majesty’s Armed Forces after 15 years service.

A former member of the Royal Artillery, Donald saw service in Germany, Canada, Cyprus, Kosovo, The Falkland Islands and Iraq.

When we opened in 2009, after the financial mess of 2008 no body would lend him money except the Poppy Appeal. With a £7 thousand pound loan from the Earl Haig fund Tweed Chiropractic was started.

Ever since we have always offered members of our armed forces a discount for their care.

We’ve learnt so much over these years and with every lesson grown better… we hope. They didn’t take as many photos back then 😊

🩺 Tips for Checking Your Blood Pressure at Home:

🕔 Sit quietly first – Rest for 5 minutes before taking a reading. Avoid caffeine, smoking, or exercise 30 minutes beforehand.

🪑 Sit correctly – Feet flat on the floor & back supported (legs not crossed!). Crossing your legs may raise your reading.

💪 Arm position – Rest your arm on a table at heart level.

📏 Correct cuff fit – The cuff should be snug but not tight. You should be able to fit one finger under the cuff.

🔌 Wire placement – Make sure the cuff’s tubing (wire) sits over the inside of your arm, aligned with your artery, pointing down towards your hand. (As shown in the picture above)

🌬️ Relax & breathe – Take a few slow breaths in and out to stay calm. Don’t talk, move or look at the machine during the measurements.

🔄 Take 2–3 readings

📒 Track regularly – Keep a log of your numbers

💡 Tip: Take your blood pressure at the same time each day (morning or evening) for the most consistent results.

💦Know Your Numbers – Hydration Edition 💦

Just like knowing your blood pressure, it’s important to know your hydration numbers too!

✅ Blood Pressure Numbers = Heart Health 🫀

✅ Hydration Numbers = Energy & Wellbeing 🌅

Did you know?
On average, you need about 30–35 ml of water per kilogram of body weight daily — that means someone weighing 78 kg should drink around 2.3–2.7 litres of water each day (and more with exercise or hot weather).

Here is a Practical Hydration Guide to help:

✅ Daily baseline: 30–35 ml per kg body weight.
✅ Adjust for activity: Add 0.4–0.8 litres per hour of exercise (depending on sweat).
✅ Adjust for environment: Hot/humid climates require more.
✅ Check urine: Pale yellow = hydrated; dark = drink more.
 
Check the personalised hydration chart below that you can use:

Baseline (no exercise, normal weather):
• 78 kg × 30–35 ml = 2.3–2.7 L per day

On workout days (moderate ~1 hr):
• Add 0.5–0.8 L
• Total = 2.8–3.5 L

On hot or highly active days:
• Add up to 1.0–1.5 L extra
• Total = 3.5–4.0+ L
 
This is how you can spread out your daily water intake:

• Morning (after waking): 300–500 ml (to rehydrate overnight loss)
• With each meal: 300–500 ml
• Between meals: 200–300 ml
• Before/during exercise: 300–600 ml
• After exercise: 500–700 ml

🔥10 Quick Fire Facts about Blood Pressure🔥

1. Two Numbers, Two Stories 2️⃣– Systolic (top) measures pressure when the heart beats; diastolic (bottom) measures it when the heart rests. 😴

2. 🫀It is often called the “Silent Killer” because it often has no symptoms.

3. It usually peaks in the morning ☀️ and at its lowest while you sleep. 💤

4. ☕ One coffee can cause a short spike in your blood pressure. Effects usually happen within 30 minutes, peaks around 1-2 hours and can last like up to 6 hours. ⏰

5. ❄️ Cold weather pushes it higher. Low temperatures cause blood vessels to temporarily narrow, causing the need for more pressure to pump blood through the vessels.

6. 🧂High blood pressure can often be fuelled by hidden salt through processed foods like bread, sauces & ready meals - not the salt shaker!! Check food labels. 🍞

7. 🍫 Dark chocolate can be heart-healthy. This is because of the chemicals called flavanols which relax blood vessels and improve blood flow.

8. 💧 Staying hydrated helps regulate Blood Pressure.

9. 🩺 Giraffes’ Blood Pressure is about 280/180 mmHg, the highest of any land animal. 🦒

10. 👨‍👩‍👧 High blood pressure issues run in families, but lifestyle matters more.
