Those local shops, they are more expensive aren't they? Right?
Wrong.
They add a few pennies to all their products right?
Wrong.
In fact, we are often much cheaper than larger retailers and provide a service that is priceless.
We sell at RRP, never a penny more and if we can also pass on every saving to our wonderful customers.
It is simply a lazy expectation that maintains this view.
I recall a product we sold, Echinacea which at the time was just £9.95, the RRP, yet a local supermarket had it as a reduced price red label - £13.95 reduced to £10.95 - The. Very. Same. Product.
I'd call that being dishonest. What would you call it?
If our little shop was dishonest with you all you would stop shopping with us, quite rightly.
So we stand for service, honesty, joy at our community and great quality. What more could you ask for? 😍❤

We squeeze a lot into our little treatment rooms.
We sit quietly on the High Street here in lovely Garstang, Lancashire.
If you need health advice and support we have a hugely experienced team happy to help you.
We have Bridgett with her amazing deep tissue massages, hot stones, Indian head massage and raindrop technique.
Jean Shaw with her allergy testing and manual lymphatic drainage.
We have two, yes TWO, acupuncturists, one from the west, Dr Kath Surtess who also offers cryotherapy.
And one from the east, TCM practitioner Paul Thompson.
Linzi Greenhouse offers holistic beauty therapy from facials to eyebrows and waxing. She also offers hot mitts which sounds rather lovely and comforting to me!
Not forgetting me, Nick Tofalos, the resident osteopath.
Our staff can offer advice and support to help restore your health and if you walk in you will be met with a smile and the human touch.
You won't have a long wait on a phone and umpteen buttons to press to be told you can see someone in a month!
❤💪
We are here for all of you.

Did you know that independent shops employ a person for approximately every £80k of turnover whilst a large supermarket will employ someone for every £180k of turnover?
And even more extreme, Amazon employs someone for every £300k it turns!
What does that mean for us all?
It's simple really, the more independent shops we have, the more jobs our community has.
Of course, this also requires us all to think about what we spend and where we spend it.
The more we choose our high street the more choice we will find, the more quality we will see and the more we will get to know each other and feel part of a local community.
And we are happy to see people just to have a chat, though buying something from us does help too! :-)

That green door.
It is beautiful and seems built to withstand a medieval battering ram!
I've been opening up that door and steeping into my place of work for the last 21 years.
And for about half of that time I've stepped in on a Monday morning to see what the previous week has been like in the shop.
Sometimes your heart sinks and sometimes you see a glimmer of hope! Running an independent shop, in fact, doing anything whilst being self employed, is not for the feint hearted.
Costs go up.
Footfall goes up and down.
Online is always there.
Every time someone chooses to come in, asks us a question, has a chat, pours their heart out, even if they don't buy anything, every time they do that is a little victory for our community.
It really does matter in a world where communication has never been so easy yet loneliness never more prevalent..
Our little shops are the glue that sticks our town and community together.
You're not just making a purchase when you buy from us.
You're keeping something precious and human alive. 😍

RESULT! Charity Shops 64, Garstang High Street 3.
How do we protect our local economy?
It's simple really, just make choices that involve spending your money in local shops where you can.
Don't chase convenience because there is invariably a hidden price to the convenience.
Even the ticket machines in the car parks suggest we save time by paying on an app! (which costs more than actually paying at the machine)
Is time really that pressured that we must disconnect from reality and use our phone/screen?
I once did a little round of 7 independent shops in Garstang counting how many people were in them at 2pm on a Thursday afternoon, then I did the same for 7 of the charity shops. - or as I prefer to call the larger chains of them - economic hoovers. They don't pay wages but hoover up local money to pass onto management structures in large cities.
What did I find? 64 people in the charity shops and just three people in the real shops that contribute in wages/services etc to the local economy.
Perhaps we can all look at our own choices and make little adjustments to what we spend and where we spend it. And perhaps even slow down and look at the relationships we can build when we connect back to our town and communities because without these what are we?

It was red and white day at school today to celebrate St George’s day, the patron saint of England of course.
There is much to be proud of in ‘Englishness’, our sense of fair play and tolerance (sometimes to a fault). We ordinary English still hold onto those things whilst our apparent leaders display most unpleasant traits.
Napoleon said we are a nation of shopkeepers and I think he meant that as an insult but I’m proud of our little shop in Garstang and all the other little shops.
It’s time we English started to value what we have more and support it with actions rather than grumbling and waiting for someone else to do something.
Happy St George’s day to you all! Shop local folks - let’s continue to be a nation of shopkeepers.

Happy St George’s Day to all proud Englishmen and women!

What a handsome row of shops we have here in Garstang!
I was about to unlock our lovely green door when I took a few steps back just to look and also to get some sunshine on the other side of the street.
It is a most perfect Lancastrian morning and when the sky is blue and the sun is shining is there anywhere fairer and more delightful than our beautiful green and pleasant land?
We grumble and groan sometimes and we definitely forget that we are blessed with riches money cannot buy in this country.
And we should be proud of our British culture, politeness, tolerance and Great British ingenuity.
We truly are lions....led by donkeys.
So come on my fellow Lancastrians and Brits of all colours and creeds, let's stand up and celebrate in this week of Shakespeare's birth (and my daughter's! 😃), all the things we have to be grateful for and proud of and let's start putting the Great back into our wonderful country.

Mushrooms are mini miracles of nature. They connect us all together in a vast matrix of life.

You really can't beat the joy of a local market and the hustle and bustle of lots of independent shops can you?
And here in lovely Garstang we have a historic and very ancient market that continues to bring life to our town every Thursday.
Forgive me for being provocative but do you support your market and local shops or prefer to sit at home ordering goods to your door from a screen?
The way I see it, we were sold a myth. A myth of convenience.
The idea we could do all our shopping under one roof. No need for individual shops and the time wasting involved.
And yet what has this myth saved us?
We no longer work near to our homes.
We need cars to go and do our shopping with the huge costs involved when once there was a shop on almost every street or just up the road.
We get stuck in traffic heading to the weekly shop to save a few pennies on milk or bread that the cost of the car, fuel, insurance, servicing, tires etc negates in the blink of an eye.
Of course this is a little simplistic as a view but there is a deep truth inside which is that we need social contact and community and that is what our shops and market provde.
I once wlaked around the town shopping with my daughter and at the end of it all she said to me, "Daddy, you know everyone!" and I pointed out to her that if we had been to a large supermarket would we have had such a lovely experience? She knew the answer to that one.
So move over conveneince, I prefer community! How about you?
