Tonight, the Metrocentre Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), one of QE Facilities’ major capital projects, is in the running for three national awards at the RICS UK Awards 2025.
We’re proud to see the Metrocentre CDC shortlisted in not one, but three categories:

- Community Benefit Award
- Public Sector Project Award
- Refurbishment/Revitalisation Award

The RICS UK Awards celebrate the most inspiring developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure across the country, recognising innovation, collaboration and positive community impact.

This nomination is a fantastic recognition of the teamwork and dedication that went into transforming an unused retail space into a modern healthcare facility serving thousands of patients across the North East.

We’re proud of everyone involved in making this project such a success and wish all shortlisted nominees the very best of luck at tonight’s ceremony!

This week, QE Facilities representatives attended the launch of Mission Christmas 2025!

For the 5th consecutive year, we’re proud to partner with Cash for Kids , supporting their campaign by providing warehouse space at Spire House to safely store the thousands of gifts donated for children across the region in the lead-up to Christmas.

Mission Christmas, organised by Cash for Kids, ensures that children living in poverty don’t wake up to an empty Christmas morning. Last year, the campaign supported thousands of families, and we’re delighted to continue playing our part in making this possible.

Kevin Read, Director of Logistics at QEF said: “QEF is beyond thrilled to support this amazing cause for another year. We’re proud to be part of Mission Christmas and delivering a positive impact to our local communities.”

The Great North Healthcare Alliance has launched its Big Build Programme on 11 July 25.

This new partnership between the four independent NHS Foundation Trusts is focused on delivering major building and redevelopment work across the North East, in line with the recently published 10-year plan. The programme will update ageing facilities, strengthen out-of-hospital care and community-based services, and support the move towards a more digitally connected estate.

For Gateshead Health, this would mean a major refurbishment of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital alongside investment in neighbourhood health services, helping meet rising demand while improving patient experience.

QE Facilities is proud to support Gateshead Health in delivering these transformative projects, using our expertise to help build a stronger, more sustainable healthcare system for our communities.

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate not one, but two outstanding achievements by our Decontamination Services team:

• Our Endoscopy Decontamination Unit recently achieved the highest level of assurance in its annual IHEEM audit. This reflects the team’s continued commitment to patient safety and regulatory excellence.

• The team also successfully completed their SGS re-certification audit for both the Sterile Services Department and Endoscopy. Auditors recognised their full compliance with all relevant standards and regulations, praising their patient-centred approach, strong competency, and ability to provide all required evidence without delay.

The SGS re-certification audit is a comprehensive process carried out every three years and involves multiple auditors over five days, making these results particularly impressive.

These achievements are a true credit to the dedication and teamwork of everyone in the department.

Well done to the entire team, you continue to set the standard.

We’re excited to share that QE Facilities will be installing a new EV charging hub at our Spire House site as part of the NHS Chargepoint Accelerator scheme, supporting a greener future for NHS logistics.

The hub will include 14 charging points and a number of 40kW fast chargers to keep our electric fleet moving efficiently.

This national initiative, backed by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), is investing £8 million across 62 NHS Trusts to support the electrification of NHS-owned and leased fleets, aiming to save up to £130 million in fuel and maintenance costs while cutting emissions.

At QEF, this aligns with our revised Green Plan and our commitment to deliver cleaner, smarter services.

QE Facilities (QEF) is proud to support Gateshead NHS in a major redevelopment project that will enhance care for women, children, and young people across the region.

Work is well underway to convert two former inpatient wards at QE Hospital into modern, purpose-built facilities including a new Colposcopy Department and a Children and Young People’s Department. This transformation, which began in January 2025, is being led by QEF on behalf of the Trust, with support from principal contractor Robertson Group and a multidisciplinary design and engineering team.

Set within the hospital’s historic 1930s building, the project has required extensive enabling works to modernise the original structure. Mechanical and electrical installations are progressing well, with internal finishes and decoration due to begin later this year. The new departments are expected to open in Autumn 2025.

We’re proud to share that the Metrocentre Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) has been shortlisted for not one but two categories at the Building Awards 2025:

- Retrofit Project of the Year – Modern
- Delivering Social Value Award

Located in the former House of Fraser unit at the Metrocentre in Gateshead, this multi-million project has transformed an empty retail space into a state-of-the-art healthcare facility, helping to bring diagnostic services closer to home for thousands of patients across the region.

Since opening in November 2024, the CDC has delivered over 12,000 appointments and is on track to reach 145,000 appointments annually, reducing pressure on hospital sites and improving early access to life-saving diagnostics.

This pioneering project is a powerful example of partnership working between: QE Facilities, Gateshead NHS, The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the Great North Healthcare Alliance, Robertson Group, Ryder Architecture, Link MEP Consulting Engineers Ltd, and Jasper Kerr Consulting.

Together, we’re creating community-based spaces that prioritise accessibility, sustainability, and meaningful social value.
