Meet Gary and Gareth, two of our Porters at QE Hospital.

This New Year’s Day bank holiday, while many people are welcoming in the year ahead, Gary and Gareth will be on duty as part of our Portering team, helping ensure patients are safely and comfortably moved across the hospital.

Porters play a vital role in the day-to-day running of the hospital, supporting patient journeys between wards, departments and clinical areas. Their work helps keep services flowing smoothly and ensures patients arrive where they need to be, when they need to be there, even on bank holidays like New Year’s Day.

Reflecting on working over the New Year bank holiday, Gareth said: “Working on bank holidays is just part of the job for us. Patients still need moving and supporting, and that doesn’t stop because it’s New Year. We work with a really supportive team and managers, and everyone just gets on with it to make sure the hospital keeps running.”

Thank you to Gary, Gareth and to all our Portering colleagues working this New Year bank holiday. Whether you’re supporting patient transport, clinical teams or essential services behind the scenes, your dedication makes a real difference every day of the year.

Meet Tracy, one of our Domestics colleagues at QE Hospital.

During the Christmas and Boxing Day bank holiday period, while many people are spending time with family and friends, colleagues like Tracy are on duty helping to keep our hospital clean, safe and welcoming for patients, visitors and staff.

As part of the Domestics team at QE Facilities, Tracy plays a vital role in maintaining high standards of cleanliness across wards and clinical areas. Her work helps reduce infection risk, supports patient recovery and ensures staff can deliver care in a safe environment, especially during the busy winter period.

Tracy is a valued member of our Domestics team and is known by colleagues for her reliability, positive attitude and commitment to maintaining high standards across the hospital environment.

Reflecting on working over the festive period, Tracy said: “Working over the holidays isn’t always easy, but knowing that what we do helps keep patients safe and comfortable makes it worthwhile. I am proud to support the hospital and the teams delivering care, especially at this time of year.”

The Domestics service is essential to the day-to-day running of the hospital, operating around the clock to support patient care, even on bank holidays. Colleagues like Tracy ensure that high standards are maintained when they are needed most.

Thank you to Tracy and to every member of staff working over the Christmas and Boxing Day bank holiday weekend. Whether you’re on the wards, supporting services behind the scenes or keeping our environments safe and clean, your dedication truly makes a difference.

There are 11 sleeps until Christmas, and as we move through the festive season, today we are shining a spotlight on one of this year’s most important milestones: the launch of the new QEF Corporate Strategy.

This strategy sets out our direction for the next five years, ensuring we continue to support exceptional patient care while strengthening QEF as an organisation. It is built around three strategic objectives that reflect our values and our ambition for the future:

⭐ Champion our People. Creating an inclusive and engaging environment where colleagues feel valued, supported and equipped to grow.

⭐ Quality Focused. Delivering consistently high standards, listening to our customers and continually improving the services that help underpin patient care.

⭐ Fit for the Future. Growing our business in a sustainable, insight driven and collaborative way so QEF continues to add value across the health and care system.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to shaping this strategy. Your insight and experience sit at the heart of QEF’s future direction.

There are just 16 sleeps until Christmas, and as we move through the festive season, we are looking back at one of the most meaningful things QEF has been part of this year.

2025 marks the fifth consecutive year that our team at Spire House has supported the Cash for Kids Mission Christmas campaign. Each year, our warehouse becomes the heart of the operation, where donated gifts are safely stored, sorted and prepared for children across the region who might otherwise wake up to an empty Christmas morning.

We are incredibly proud to support this important initiative and grateful to everyone involved for helping make a real difference to families in our local communities.

✨ Celebrating Excellence at the Gateshead Health STAR Awards 2025

Last week, colleagues from QE Facilities joined teams across Gateshead NHS at the annual STAR Awards, an evening dedicated to recognising the incredible work and commitment of staff who go above and beyond to make a difference every day.

We were proud to see two of our teams represented on the night:

• The Small Works Team, invited as special guests in recognition of their outstanding contributions and the impact of their work within the Fit for the Future category.

• The Domestics Team, who were crowned winners of the Patient Experience Award, celebrating their acts of kindness, compassion, and innovation in patient care, a truly well-deserved achievement that reflects their commitment to making a difference for patients, staff, and visitors every single day

These achievements reflect the dedication of our people and the vital role QE Facilities plays in supporting the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality care for patients, staff, and visitors across the Trust.

Congratulations to all our colleagues who were recognised and to everyone who continues to make a difference every day. 🌟

Tonight, the Metrocentre Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), one of QE Facilities’ major capital projects, is in the running for three national awards at the RICS UK Awards 2025.
We’re proud to see the Metrocentre CDC shortlisted in not one, but three categories:

- Community Benefit Award
- Public Sector Project Award
- Refurbishment/Revitalisation Award

The RICS UK Awards celebrate the most inspiring developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure across the country, recognising innovation, collaboration and positive community impact.

This nomination is a fantastic recognition of the teamwork and dedication that went into transforming an unused retail space into a modern healthcare facility serving thousands of patients across the North East.

We’re proud of everyone involved in making this project such a success and wish all shortlisted nominees the very best of luck at tonight’s ceremony!
