๐ŸŒž Warm weather making your little one fussy?

Overheating can leave babies uncomfortable, unsettled and harder to soothe, often resulting in more crying. A timely reminder from ICON:

I โ€“ Infant crying is normal, and it will stop. Crying tends to increase around two weeks of age, peak at six to eight weeks, then gradually diminish.

C โ€“ Comfort methods can help (rocking, gentle touch, soothing sounds).

O โ€“ It is okay to walk away briefly if the crying gets too much, just ensure the baby is safe first.

N โ€“ Never, ever shake or hurt a baby.

Top tips to cool and calm your baby:

โ€ข Dress them in light, loose-fitting clothing.
โ€ข Keep rooms cool by drawing curtains during the day.
โ€ข Use a fan for air circulation, but do not aim it directly at the baby.
โ€ข Offer feeds more often to keep them hydrated.
โ€ข Never leave a baby, even for a moment, in a parked car.

If your baby seems unusually sleepy, irritable, or has fewer wet nappies, they may be dehydrated. Consider seeking medical advice.

Stay cool, stay safe, and remember: Babies cry. You can cope!

During periods of hot weather it can be a challenging and uncomfortable time if you are pregnant, here are some tips to keep cool and safe ๐Ÿฅต

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, aiming for 1.6 litres (6-8 glasses) daily, and more in hot weather.

Limit Sun Exposure: Avoid direct sunlight, especially between 11 am and 3 pm.

Stay Cool: Take cool baths or showers, and use fans to circulate air.

Wear Loose Clothing: Opt for light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made of natural fibres.

Avoid Strenuous Activity: Reduce or avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day.

Monitor for Symptoms: Be aware of symptoms of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, such as dizziness, headache, or intense thirst.

Seek Shade: If you need to be outside, stay in the shade as much as possible.

Check on Others: If you know anyone who may be more vulnerable, such as the elderly or those with pre-existing conditions, check on them and ensure they are taking precautions as well

Hot weather can be extra challenging when youโ€™re pregnant. Tommyโ€™s midwife Amina has some tips for staying safe and well in hot weather, at home and abroad.
