Shaftesbury The disability charity enabling people with disabilities to live the life they want to lead

Shaftesbury is the charity that’s committed to enabling people with disabilities to live the life they want to lead. We work to change what is unlivable, helping people to tackle the barriers they face and create a livable life. We believe that the people we support have the right to a full and flourishing life and they deserve the very best in service delivery. Driven by our core values, Shaftesbury strives to be open, enabling, inclusive and courageous in all that we do.

As we begin a new year, we are once again celebrating the incredible commitment of Sue, who is continuing her training for the London Marathon in support of Shaftesbury. 🏃‍♀️💚

Sue is getting closer to her fundraising target with every mile she runs, helping us open more doors for children, young people and adults with disabilities.

Please consider supporting her and helping her reach her goal. 🌟

We were delighted to mark Epiphany with a special service at the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula inside the Tower of London. ⛪✨

Supporters, Trustees and friends joined us for beautiful music, prayers for our staff, volunteers and the people we support.

It was a meaningful way to begin the year and to celebrate our long heritage of opening doors for people with disabilities. 💚

A brilliant day out for Phil and Chris (his support worker) from Shaftesbury’s North Wales service. 💚

These two share a love of Pokémon, so decided to go explore the new Pokémon shop in Colwyn Bay – checking out the cards, characters and all the latest goodies.

We hope you were able to catch 'em all (or at least find some cool cards).

We love seeing this brilliant creative work from our friends at Victoria Education Centre. 🌟

Learning is a big part of life at Shaftesbury Bradbury Court. 💚

Recently, people we support took part in interactive science sessions and Open Future Learning courses such as Taking Control and Friendship and Community, earning certificates to celebrate their achievements. These opportunities help build confidence, independence and valuable life skills.

👏 Congratulations to Brian, Angela, Katrina, Michael, Ruki and Christopher – we’re very proud of you and everything you’ve achieved.

At Shaftesbury Dolphin Court, the team ensures that aside from the excellent care they provide, residents are given opportunities to explore their passions.

Residents engage in arts and crafts, social clubs, and fitness activities like trampolining and inclusive cycling. An accessible minibus gives them easy access to local parks, cafes, and Southend town centre. It is these things that makes life livable.

“The vision and values of the service which were shared by all staff reflected best practice principles ensuring people received support to live full and independent lives, challenging the barriers around supporting people with disabilities.” CQC report

When Lisburn switches on its Christmas lights this year, Irvine will be there as always, collecting money for local charities.

He is a well-known face in this Northern Irish community, spending much of his time out and about, volunteering for good causes.

You will find him helping out at his church or local drop-in centre, or cheering up care home residents by singing with the community choir.

Irvine lives independently, supported by Shaftesbury one day every week. He is a shining example of how opening the door for people with disabilities can make a difference to the lives of others.

At Shaftesbury, we believe everyone deserves to feel at home at Christmas.

For Mandy, that feeling comes from the little things: her own room with a sea view, her church community, and the chance to celebrate her faith in a space where she feels safe and valued.

Now that she is at Shaftesbury Ashley Place she can fully embrace the festive season - attending church, decorating her room, and sharing hugs with staff every morning.

Christmas isn’t always easy, but for Mandy, it’s a time of connection and comfort. With the support of her long-time friend Jean and a caring staff team, the door has truly opened to the kind of celebration she deserves.
