Speech Therapy North East

Speech Therapy North East Speech Therapy North East provides independent speech and language therapy services for adult clients across North East England.

For those seeking therapy for children please note we do not provide services for children. Speech Therapy North East was created by Matthew Nakonesky, a highly specialist speech & language therapist who has over 15 years experience of working with adults with communication and swallowing problems as a result of stroke/head injury or a progressive condition e.g. Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis etc. Matthew has also had significant experience working with clients involved in a medico-legal claim and clients who require/use high-tech communication devices. Therapy sessions are carried out in your own home and range from one off sessions for assessment/advice to longer blocks of therapy with a very client-centred approach at the heart of every intervention. Realistic and client-specific goals will always be set and therapy blocks will aim to deliver an appropriate mix of therapist led sessions and therapy tasks which can be completed independently or with the support of family members/carers and progress monitored. The use of technology in providing therapy e.g. I-pads, apps etc is another area often explored with clients where possible. Speech Therapy North East also delivers training sessions covering both communication and swallowing disorders and can provide tailored training packages for small to large groups. For further information about what services are offered, therapy costs or simply for some advice you can get in touch via telephone, email or messaging via this page.

Last week we notched up our 6th year of officially trading as Speech Therapy North East Ltd. We have introduced 15 associate therapists over the last 6 years and we have worked with 150+ inspiring clients over that time.

Reflecting on another year of providing independent speech and language therapy services across the north of England, it made us think about how grateful we are. Grateful that all the amazing case managers, and brilliant personal injury law firms throughout the region, put their trust and faith in our team to work with their clients and deliver the quality and innovative speech and language therapy interventions we pride ourselves on.

So a BIG thank you to all of the wonderful case managers and law firms we work with - we look forward to continuing to work with you all for many more years to come.

Another month almost gone so it's time to again celebrate the wonderful achievements and progress that our clients have made. This month we would like to shine the spotlight on Tommy. Tommy has worked so hard in his speech and language therapy sessions and was a really positive and motivating influence in the Social Communication Group he attended.

It absolutely makes our day when we hear the comments that Tommy has made about the impact of his speech and language therapy intervention and really reinforces why we do the sort of work we do!

Support workers play such a crucial role in our clients' rehab programs. They are there on the ground, day in day out, and are therefore well placed to support a range of therapeutic tasks and strategies that we put in place for our clients.

But when some support workers only work night shifts, and we need to handover something like an oral desensitisation routine and oral care program, then we need to be as flexible as we can in delivering our training sessions.

So it was a lovely trip down to the coast yesterday evening for a session with one of our client's support workers. An added bonus with the light nights and glorious north east coastline.

We’re keen to start celebrating the many “wins”, achievements and progress our clients make. The most rewarding part of our job is seeing our clients reach their goals and to hear how much of an impact their progress has had on their lives.

We are kicking things off with our lovely client Robin who has worked so hard trying to regain his verbal communication skills following a stroke just over a year ago. We are grateful to have supported Robin with his communication therapy whilst he waited for his local NHS service to pick him up, and we referred him into the wonderful Aphasia Clinic at Newcastle University alongside signposting him to the NETA Aphasia Support Centre - also at the uni.

We can’t wait to hear how Robin gets on at the clinic to see how he manages to capitalise on the good progress he has already made.

Another week, another new associate therapist to reveal!

Over the moon to welcome Tasmin Wade to our team of associate speech and language therapists. Tasmin brings a wealth of experience to the team and will help bolster our capacity in the north of the region. We're particularly keen to tap into her experience and passion for swallow rehabilitation as we look to expand the services we can provide to clients with swallowing difficulties. More to be revealed about that in coming months 🤔

Absolutely thrilled to announce the first of 4 new associate therapists who will be joining the Speech Therapy North East team. As always, I'm very grateful that therapists feel like our team is the sort of team they would like to be a part of. It's definitely a very positive reflection of the very supportive and friendly environment that we have here at Speech Therapy North East.

Debbie is a fantastic addition to our team of associate speech and language therapists and brings vast experience with her extensive community based work with adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties. We can't wait for people to meet Debbie and to get her up and running with a clinical caseload in the very near future.

For more information about Debbie or about the services we offer at Speech Therapy North East visit our website at www.speechtherapynortheast.co.uk

We have a new look website! And we're very proud and pleased to reveal that, after a lot of time and effort, our website has been developed to be very communication friendly. A speech and language therapy website should be really shouldn't it! Come and take a look: www.speechtherapynortheast.co.uk

There are 3 options when you visit the website:

1. A "communication friendly" version for people with communication difficulties: key words, shorter phrases and a video to support comprehension.

2. An "easy read" version for people who find busy websites too busy to focus on. So reduced pictures and content to allow information to be read and processed more easily.

3. The "standard layout" version - the full website with all the bells and whistles.

A HUGE thank you to Jack Barber at Hello Technology for his patience, ideas and hard work in re-developing our website. He has been a real pleasure to work with and I would strongly recommend him to anyone looking to revamp their websites or for any other IT areas that he covers. So thanks Jack!

Well we have totted up all the pounds and pennies and we've put the abacus back in the cupboard. So we are pleased to announce that the grand total raised by our recent charity quiz was £2513.83. These funds have been sent over to Headway Tyneside and we look forward to hearing how they think they'll use that pot of money.

Thanks again for everyone who supported our event both those that booked tables and attended the event and all the generous people/companies who donated raffle prizes.

After a lot of positive feedback about the night, we're pretty confident we will repeat this event again next year! So we'll be looking for lots of support again closer to the time.

Have a great week everyone.

Well what an evening that was at our first ever charity quiz. As much as we were overwhelmed by the amount of people who came to support the event last night, we have been totally blown away with all the kind words and feedback from people throughout today. We’re so glad that everyone had a great night.

So once again, a big thank you to every one who came and a HUGE thank you to all the people and companies who donated a prize to our raffle. You can see a list of everyone who donated to the raffle in one of the photos we’ve attached from the night.

We are still totting up figures and finalising a few things but at this stage we look like we have raised somewhere in the region of £2,600. We are SO happy with that figure and can’t believe how generous people were on the night. So again - thank you! We can’t wait to hand the money over to Headway Tyneside and find out what they think they might use that pot of money for.

And finally, but very importantly - we need to announce our quiz champions from last night. And the winning team was ECMS Ltd aka Digby’s Divas. So great to see a quiz team with a real life mascot! Congratulations on the win guys.

There have been a lot of calls for us to repeat the event and once we have recovered from yesterday I think we’ll give that some serious thought!

Until then, have a great weekend everyone.

Today is all systems go for our charity quiz later this evening! We can't wait to see everyone who has booked tickets. We especially can't wait to raise as much money as we can for Headway Tyneside.

The quiz starts at 7pm and with all the things we have got in store tonight we will be aiming for a pretty prompt start. Doors open at 6.30pm though we will be around earlier than that so I'm sure we can welcome our lovely guests a little earlier than planned.

We have allocated tables to make finding a table easier and quicker for everyone - so just look out for your table name amongst all the tables.

I think that's all for now, so see all you quizzers later today!

We are now up and running to sell tickets for our upcoming charity quiz.

As a quick recap - the event is being organised by three of our clients for their project in our current Social Communication Group. The quiz is raising valuable funds for Headway Tyneside and all monies raised via tickets and on the night will go directly to the charity. Our clients have also helped to make a flyer for their event.

We are looking for donations for prizes for a raffle on the night of the quiz and there is an option to sponsor a quiz round for £60 per round. There are 6 quiz rounds in total. If you or someone you know would like to donate a raffle prize or would like to sponsor a round - get in touch via matthew@speechtherapynortheast.co.uk or 07732118607.

You can purchase tickets using the following link - £60 plus a booking fee PER TEAM (maximum of 6 people per team):
