Worried about your cervical screening appointment? Here are some practical tips to help.

You may need support to attend your cervical screening. When you book, tell your GP surgery or sexual health clinic if you need any reasonable adjustments, such as:
- a longer or double appointment
- information in other languages or formats or an interpreter
- a chaperone in the room with you (another trained member of staff)
- an appointment with a trusted doctor or nurse who you already have a good relationship with

You should:
- book your screening for when you’re not having a period – this includes the 2 days before or after you bleed
- wait until after any treatment for unusual vaginal discharge or a pelvic infection
- let them know if you are or could be pregnant, as you may need to delay your screening

What is cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer develops very slowly from abnormal cell changes in the cervix. These changes do not cause any symptoms, but they may be found with cervical screening tests. If the tests show abnormal cell changes, treatment can prevent cancer developing.
People who have a cervix include women, transgender (trans) men and people assigned female at birth.

Each year, more than 3,200 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the UK. This type of cancer can affect all ages.

It is essential that you have your cervical screening.

What is cervical screening?
Cervical screening is a way of preventing cervical cancer (cancer of the cervix). It uses tests to find abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix.

The first part of cervical screening is to have a smear test. This is also called the cervical screening test.

If you are a woman aged 25 to 64 and you have not attended your Cervical Screening appointment, please contact your Doctors Surgery.
If you have not received an invitation for any reason please also contact the surgery
