When an elderly customer was struggling with technology, Donna from our Southport store went to the lady's home to help with her online order – even taking with her some essential items like bread, milk and cheese that she needed.

Team leader Donna, who has worked at the store for 18 years, said: "The lady was in her 80s and wasn't able to leave her home. She has regular deliveries but usually has somebody with her to help. On this occasion she was really struggling, so she phoned us for help. I said I’d drive round and sort it for her and asked if she needed anything bringing. I helped her with order and talked her through it and didn’t leave until she got a receipt that her delivery for the next day. She was very happy and very grateful and even phoned the store the next day to thank us.”

Store manager Shannon, who nominated Donna for an Asda service superstar award, said everyone was proud of her. She said: “Donna went truly out of her way to support this customer.”

When Asda Liscard's community champion Manda heard her home town wasn't going to have a Christmas tree again this year she knew she had to do something to help spread a little festive cheer.

She got in touch with colleagues in our head office in Leeds to say how much people in Liscard would love a nice Christmas tree in the town centre – and they worked their magic, donating a 30ft Norwegian Pine, which was switched on in front a big crowd by local star Natasha Hamilton from Atomic Kitten.

Manda said: "Being from Liscard I remember trees of the past and that nostalgic feeling and I just thought that something was missing. Having a tree in the place where you do your shopping is so important. In my role as community champion I am aware of the community spirit of Liscard and it's just nice that the people got behind it. They are such giving and caring people and it was really nice for Asda to give something back. There was such a buzz about the town last night, I don't think there's been so many people in the centre for a very long time."

Natasha said: "I’m so proud to be part of this incredible moment for Liscard, especially since my first performance when I was 15 was in this town. I grew up knowing how important community spirit is, especially at Christmas, and seeing everyone come together has been magical. This tree isn’t just about lights and decorations – it’s about reminding people that even when things feel tough, joy and togetherness can still shine.”

A big thank you to service colleague Brenda who went out of her way to retrieve a 79-year-old customer's credit card which she dropped down the side of a scan and go machine at our Castlepoint store.

The card was stuck out of reach, so the lady thought she was going to have to call her bank to cancel the card until Brenda saved the day. She said: "Brenda came back with a thin ruler, which she slotted down the gap as she could see my card. She was on her hands and knees trying to retrieve it and on her last attempt my card came out. I cannot thank her enough."

Brenda's been nominated for an Asda service superstar award by customer manager Katy, who said: “Brenda is a one in a million colleague who we really appreciate. She has regular customers who come in just to see her and she makes their week or day but having a chat with them. She is a shining star.”

Colleagues at our South Woodham Ferrers store saved the day for a schoolboy who desperately needed a baking tray for a cookery exam in which he needed to make an apple crumble.

The boy's distressed mum rang the store to see if she could buy one and have it delivered to William de Ferrers School as soon as possible, as it would have taken her an hour to get to the store and her husband was in London. Non-food manager Rod, who answered her call, said: "The lady was a bit upset. Her son had all the ingredients for the crumble, but didn't have the baking tray so wouldn't be able to do the exam. As a parent myself, I knew how she was feeling so I said to her not to worry and we'd get a baking tray to him before the exam started. I couldn't have the boy standing there and not being able to do the exam! It wasn't a problem. It made me feel good too, which was nice."

Rod paid for the baking tray himself and then porter Tom walked the few minutes to the the school and dropped it off. Rod said: "The boy's mum was extremely grateful and couldn't believe that we'd do that for her. I just told her that's we do. We just hope he did well in the exam."

Store manager Glenn nominated Rod for an Asda service superstar award for his kindness and he received star points which covered the cost of the baking tray as well as a reward for going above and beyond.

When a little girl's helium birthday balloon flew away while her mum was loading her car in the Click & Collect bay at our Hulme store, home shopping team leader Thomas ran inside to get her another one, instantly putting a smile back on her face.

Twenty-five-year-old Thomas said: "The balloon just sailed away and the girl was upset so I just went to get her another one. They were very happy. It was a small thing but it probably made her day."

Customer manager Lisa said: "The little girl was devastated and her mum didn't have any money with her to buy a new balloon. Thomas ran into store and got a new one to give to the little girl. It was a truly lovely thing to do. The customer rang me when she got home saying how fantastic he was." Thomas has now been nominated for an Asda service superstar award for his kindness.

When nine-year-old Daley learned about food banks in a school assembly he wanted to help – so he called in at our Boldon store with his mum Hayley to spend £100 of pocket money he'd saved to buy essential supplies for the foodbank at St Aidan's Catholic Academy.

Hayley, who shops at the store each week, said: "Daley is so kind-hearted he will do anything for anyone. We are so proud of him – he is amazing. He loved going round the store; it was like being on Supermarket Sweep! It's a lovely store."

When colleagues at the store heard of Daley's actions they invited him back in so they could give him a gift voucher and present to say thank you. The store's community champion Tracey said: "The store and food bank were so deeply moved by and proud of Daley's contribution. We were all in awe by the sheer amount of food he bought. He really is a local hero." And the school said: "Daley's generosity will make a real difference to families in our community. His kindness truly embodies the spirit of giving. Thank you for being an inspiration to us all."

Bakery colleague Jo from our Arrowe Park store went out of her way to make sure a little autistic boy got a chocolate cake with his photo on for his birthday.

The cake had sold out when the boy's mum called in to get it, so Jo took her phone number and said she'd give her a call as soon as one came in. There was a delivery the next day and Jo immediately put one aside and called the customer.

The lady was so impressed with the exceptional service that when she picked up the cake she brought Jo a bouquet of flowers and a thank you card which said: "Your gorgeousness has really uplifted me, you've been such a big help." Jo said: "The lady was so made up when I phoned, but I was just happy to help. I've done it a few times for people. When she came in with the flowers I was gobsmacked; it was such a nice surprise."

When a regular customer had a tumble on her way into our Leek supermarket and hurt her shoulder our colleague Lorrisa stepped in to help – dropping off the lady's shopping at home and driving her to A&E so she could get checked out.

Lorrisa booked the lady, who's in her 70s, into A&E and stayed with her until her husband arrived, before going back to the store. She said: "When her husband returned from the hospital he called in to thank me and the store for helping. He appreciated that I’d recognised her as a regular customer which made her confident in me running her home and going in her house. He said that she'd damaged her shoulder and collarbone. Thankfully, she didn’t need surgery. She's still sore, but is recovering.

"We are lucky that we have a lot of local customers here which we recognise and chat to. I am fully confident any of us would have done the same. It’s part of the reason we have so many regular customers. It’s nice to help when you can."

Six-year-old Teddy loves lending a hand when delivery driver Tony from our Derby store delivers to the family home – and he's such a great help that Tony's given him his own Asda high-vis jacket, name badge and lanyard to make him feel part of the team.

Teddy is high-functioning autistic and his mum Bonnie says Tony's kindness has made a huge difference. She said: "Tony is a really lovely soul. He always has time for Teddy, and makes his day as he lets him help him. He goes out of his way to show Teddy how it's done. Teddy now even knows what order the crates go in. He takes his time with Teddy, he doesn't rush him and always praises him. Tony has restored my faith in people; he's an absolute credit to Asda. Teddy wears his Asda jacket with pride. It's given him so much confidence and really brought his sparkle back. Every time the Asda delivery comes, Teddy wears his jacket and name badge."

Tony said: "Teddy's a lovely little lad. He was over the moon when I gave him his jacket. His mum said it made his day. I love my job as every day is different. I love meeting people, and helping them. I really enjoy it."

It's a real family affair at our Ashford store where husband and wife Paul and Tracey work together with their son Lewis and Tracey's children Sophie and Bradley.

Tracey is a section leader on George and has worked at the store for 26 years, while Paul is a warehouse colleague and started two years after Tracey. They met working at the store. Sophie is a home and leisure colleague and has been there for 13 years, Bradley has been a service colleague for seven years, while Lewis is a chilled team leader and has been at the store for four years.

Tracey said: "We've been together for 22 years now. We just started talking and it went from there, so it was a real Asda romance! We all live together except Sophie as she'd got her own family. We try not to talk about work when we get home! We all get on really well, and have been at the store so long now that we are part of the furniture."

Bradley says they all love working together "It's cool to have them all here in the store, it keeps us all close knit." And Sophie said: "There's a great friendly atmosphere here and everyone is lovely. I enjoy the different variety of jobs here – I love doing the Christmas aisles."

Only two days after completing her first aid training, Debbie from our Sittingbourne store was called to do CPR on bakery colleague Tara who'd collapsed with an angina attack.

Debbie was helped by fellow first aider 19-year-old Tyler, who calmly relayed advice and instructions to her from a 999 call handler. Tara said: "I'd like to say a massive thank you to them both for what they did on that day. If it wasn't for them I don't know what would have happened. Having first aiders in the store is just so important. I was putting cookies on a shelf and all of a sudden I got a pain in my chest, going down my arm and I just blacked out. I don't remember much of it at all."

Tara spent 17 days in Medway Hospital where she underwent various tests and scans. She's now back at work, but is on medication. Debbie said: "I passed my first aid training on the Thursday and Tara's episode was on the Saturday – two days later! I wasn't expected to use that part of my training. I thought I'd just be doing cuts, grazes, burns that sort of thing. When I was doing the compressions I was actually crying as it was so upsetting as I've known Tara for a long time. I'm just glad that she was okay."

Both Debbie and Tyler have been nominated for Asda service superstar awards for their actions. Asda Sittingbourne store manager Shah said: "I'm incredibly proud of both Debbie and Tyler for stepping in and administering CPR. Their calm and decisive actions were a testament to their training and compassion and we are all grateful and proud for their efforts to help our colleague."

30/10/2025

We're bringing back the Winter Warmer £1 meal deal in our Asda Cafes to support older people during the colder winter months.

The meal deal is available from November 1st until the end of February and offers people aged 60 and over the chance to enjoy soup, bread and unlimited tea and coffees for just £1 in Asda Cafes nationwide.

Our community champions are also inviting and encouraging many local over 60s groups and individuals to use the £1 Winter Warmer meal as an opportunity to come and chat to others. Last year, Asda’s Christmas community tracker laid bare the lack of human interaction and conversations millions of older people suffer in the run up and during the festive period, with one in 10 not sure they will speak to anyone between December 15th and January 1st and one in 10 over 60s said they’d gone to a supermarket simply to speak to another person.

Jordan Cummings, Buying Manager, Cafes and Concessions at Asda, said: "We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income. Last year alone we sold over half a million meals showing the vital need for this initiative. We hope the Winter Warmer meals will continue to be just as impactful as last year across the winter months for those who need it most."

Well done, Rosie!

Well done, Rosie!

A regular customer who had an anxiety seizure in our Gillingham Pier was so grateful for the way our colleague Rosie helped her that she gave her some flowers and chocolates to say thank you.

Rosie knows the customer well and knew just what to do when she saw the lady collapse at the store's self-checkouts, blocking off the area to give her privacy while the person she was shopping with sat behind her head to make sure she didn't hurt herself. The store's customer manager Cindy said: "Rosie is a kind-hearted and caring person and I wasn't surprised that she met the customer's needs at that time."

01/10/2025

Asda colleague Steve stepped in to help a customer whose car wouldn't start after she'd just done a big shop in our Gillingham Pier store.

The lady was getting into a bit of a panic about not being able to get home and because her phone was about to run out of power while she needed to call her breakdown service. Steve reassured her, bought her a charger for her phone and plugged it in so she was able to call for assistance. He then put her frozen items in the freezer and chilled items in the chiller so they wouldn't be ruined by the time she got home.

The store's community champion Diana said: "The lady was so very grateful and offered to come in and pay him back, but Steve being Steve said there was no need and he would have done the same for anyone." Store manager Sheku has nominated Steve for an Asda service superstar award for his kindness, saying: "Steve is a very kind and generous person and I'm not surprised by his actions."

I recently had the pleasure to meet children at Hempstead Junior School who have benefitted from aa Asda Foundation grant of £500 applied for by Strive PE and Sport.

They do what it says on the tin and run sporting activities at 15 local schools here in Medway during lunchtimes and two schools they go to after the school day has ended.

The equipment they bought with the grant has enabled them to start playing pickleball. They bought the nets, court markers, balls and paddles. I met Rob, co-director and coach, who said the game has been great for the children as they have learnt new rules and skills for the game. It has helped with their co-ordination, decision making, team work and listening to instruction.

I watched the children play for a short while and they were certainly having fun. At the end of the session they all helped to gather the equipment and put it away.

If you'd like further information about what Strive do, or would like to help and coach, then please get in touch via their website www.strivepeandsport.co.uk

Earlier in the year, I had a request from a group, Kent Crusaders Basketball, to go on the green token board. I explained we no longer have them, but that they might qualify for an Asda Foundation grant. This was a week before the closing date.

I was so pleased to have received notification that they were successful in getting a grant for £990. They were even more pleased!

They have used the money to set up a girl's league to be played over the summer. They have now got different coloured T-shirts for the teams and have the medals ready for presentation at the end. Cristina Stanciuca is their coach and an ex professional player. She is pictured holding the cheque with me and said: "We have wanted to set up a girl's league for a long time and this grant has enabled it to happen."They have a boy's league that has been going for a while. So, if anyone wants to join in with friendly but competitive tournaments, please contact Kent Crusaders Basketball via their website www.kentcrusaders.co.uk. You can also contact them via Facebook or Instagram - KentCrusadersBB. They will be pleased to see you.

We had volunteers in store from Medway Foodbank asking customers to donate items from various small shopping lists. Some customers were very generous and donated many items.

I know Medway Foodbank are very grateful for all the donations given over the weekend. The total amount of crates collected from this store is 85 and they were all packed tightly. The photo below shows the first ones going back to the warehouse. Mike was here all day Friday and Saturday and Maggie was one of many other volunteers doing a shorter shift.

I have just had the pleasure to meet a few people at the charity Medway Open Award Centre. They are only about a mile away from this store based at The Strand.

They run Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions where they train the young people before they go out. Working with 10 schools here in Medway they provide practice expeditions as well as tents, waterproofs, rucksacks with the equipment required, roll mats and tranga stoves. All this for a small fee of £10, and a reasonable deposit.

This year they will be running 10 bronze, 5 silver and 2 gold expeditions. Their year is from April to October, so they are very busy. In 2024 998 people did their D of E with MOAC and it is anticipated that this year there will be 1200+. They are looking for volunteers to help, so why not contact them.

Whilst I was there, Honey arrived to collect her rucksack ready for the weekend. She said she's looking forward to her experience. There was a room with a load of rucksacks ready to go, for a gold D of E expedition. The grant was spent on compasses, which Malcom is holding, and map cases. I hope to work with them more in the future.– Diana, Asda community champion

I had the great pleasure to present an Asda Foundation grant for £2,000 to The Medway Street Angels, a small charity that does big things.

It provides hot meals for the homeless and those in need and was started 13 years ago when the founder, Amber, decided to talk to a homeless man instead of walking by. She went home and prepared some hot soup and got some bread and took it back to him. The charity has grown from there. They now provide about 240 hot meals over three evenings a week.

This photo of myself with Amber's dad, Paul, was taken in a section of a warehouse of that a local business has been given to the charity. Stored there are donated clothes, hygiene products and a small amount of food. The hot food is prepared elsewhere by volunteers and the grant money has already been put to use to buy food for these meals.

Meet Les who's been volunteering with Royal Brit for the last seven years.

He served in the Royal Artillary for 24 years and has been all over the world, including Canada, Hong Kong and Belize.

He's always very enthusiastic and has a natter with our customers, engaging with children too. Our customers are always very generous; one man last week gave two £50 notes!

Les is the Standard Bearer trainer in this area for RBL and sometimes has to leave the store early to perform this duty.

This year his last day in store will be Thursday 7th November because he will be being trained himself on Friday. He will be the regional Standard Bearer for RBL on Saturday 9th November at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. There are two services, one in the afternoon and one in the evening which is shown on TV. I have told him I will wave to him, but hopefully not put him out of stride as he descends the stairs.
