Does your child skip words, lose their place, or struggle with reading—even though they’re smart? It might not be dyslexia—it could be a visual processing issue.

Irlen Syndrome can affect individuals across all demographics, but certain groups are more commonly associated with it due to overlapping challenges or circumstances:
1. Neurodivergent Individuals:
• Those with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, or specific learning disabilities often experience Irlen Syndrome.
• It can exacerbate difficulties with reading, attention, or processing.
2. People with Brain Injuries:
• Individuals recovering from concussions, traumatic brain injuries, or strokes may develop Irlen-like symptoms.
3. Highly Sensitive Individuals:
• People with heightened sensitivity to light, color, or patterns (often tied to migraines or sensory processing issues).
4. Children and Teens:
• Reading and learning challenges in school often reveal the symptoms during developmental years.
5. Military Veterans and Athletes:
• Those exposed to repeated head trauma or blast injuries are at risk of developing symptoms.

Irlen Syndrome spans all ages and cultures, but it’s especially prevalent in groups with visual processing differences or neurological conditions.

Did you know??? The overlap between ADHD and Irlen Syndrome in approximately 30% of individuals is likely due to shared sensory processing challenges and their impact on attention and behavior.

Irlen symptoms can be mistaken for ADHD (e.g., distractibility from visual discomfort). This overlap might inflate perceived co-occurrence rates if Irlen isn’t recognized independently.

The visual strain of Irlen can worsen focus and self-regulation, particularly in those with ADHD, compounding their symptoms.

Addressing both conditions is crucial, as treating one without considering the other may leave residual challenges.

🕶️ Above the surface people see “different” colored lenses, being worn by people, whether it’s light or dark outside, whether they’re indoors or outdoors.

🕶️ What they don’t see is how the glasses help them see words as they are not as flying objects, help minimizing eye strain and migraines, help them see the world and colors around them as they actually are…. all with the help of custom colored filtered spectral filtered Irlen Lenses.

Let’s break the stigma and continue to spread the word on Irlen Syndrome that affects up to 15% of the general population.

Irlen Spectral Filters are better than other colored lenses because they're not just a colored lens. Irlen Spectral Filters are the result of an in-depth diagnostic process designed to find the individualized color formula that works just right for you. The Irlen Method is a dynamic process of color selection that changes with you as your brain grows, changes, and heals. Irlen is a process, not a product. No other colored lens can compare.

This week is Irlen Syndrome Awareness Week.

Five years ago we were not even aware that this condition existed. Our daughter was diagnosed in early 2020 and with the use of coloured overlays, coloured paper and finally, coloured lenses, the difference in her learning, behaviour and how she sees the world has changed completely. Her school work has massively improved and for the first time ever she can walk in a straight line, lamp posts are now straight and she can see clouds and trees in 3D!

Irlen Syndrome is a perceptual processing disorder that affects the brain’s ability to process visual information because of light sensitivity.
