Medway NHS Foundation Trust

Medway NHS Foundation Trust This is the official page of Medway NHS Foundation Trust (Not 24/7). Includes news, updates and information from Medway Maritime Hospital.

Medway Maritime Hospital treats around 400,000 patients each year mainly in Medway and Swale, but increasingly other parts of North and West Kent too. Everyday we see around 1,400 outpatients, about 250 patients use our emergency department and approximately 150 patients need to be admitted for hospital care and treatment. The range of specialist services we offer have grown over recent years, as have the communities we serve, bringing to Medway services which in the past, patients have had to travel miles for. This includes the cardiac catheter suite, West Kent Vascular Centre, West Kent Centre for Urology, and the Macmillan Cancer Care Unit.

Lead research midwife, Sarah-Jayne is passionate that the project is open to a wide range of women.

She explains: “As we learn more about genomics, it’s really evident that we need to involve people from all ethnicities. We need a rich diversity to ensure our research benefits everyone. This project goes way beyond babies!”

Congratulations to Clinical Support Worker Sergiu Darie who was awarded November's Employee of the Month Award.

His nomination reads: "Sergiu's dedication and hard work does not go unnoticed. He is a true hero in healthcare and staff could learn so much from him."

Team of the Month was awarded to the Maternity To***co Team.

Their nomination reads: "Sue and Emma work together within our small team to support pregnant mothers to quit smoking during their pregnancy. We have seen a significant increase in the successful quit rates over the last few months and overall decline in the number of mothers smoking at delivery.”

Congratulations to our clinicians who have played a key role in a major UK research study that will improve how premature babies with breathing difficulties are assessed and treated in neonatal units.

The Serial Lung Ultrasound in predicting the need for surfactant and Respiratory course in Preterm infants (SLURP) study is a national study investigating whether serial lung ultrasound can help identify which premature babies will require breathing support shortly after birth.

The study focused on babies born before 34 weeks of pregnancy who developed breathing difficulties soon after birth. It involved doctors and nurses from three UK neonatal units including our Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit.

Dr Bikash Bhojnagarwala, Lead for Neonatal Services was the principal investigator for the study. He said: “Overall, the study has shown that with proper training, lung ultrasound can become a routine bedside tool in neonatal units, reducing the need for X-rays and helping doctors make faster, more targeted treatment decisions.

“We are very grateful to the patients and staff who collaborated on the study. Their participation was invaluable.”

The findings have been published in three peer-reviewed medical journals, including the European Journal of Pediatrics and presented at international conferences.

“I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Those are the words of Denise Short as she celebrates 50 years of continuous service at Medway.

Denise, known affectionately as Den to colleagues, joined the hospital in 1975 at just 16 years old. Over the decades she has taken on a wide range of roles, including becoming one of our first female porters.

Today Den works as a Ward Clerk on our Pre‑Operative Care Unit, a role she has held for the past eight years. Renowned for her warm welcome and calm efficiency, she is often the first friendly face patients meet as she guides them through the booking process, ensures their paperwork is complete, and helps them feel supported ahead of their procedures.

To celebrate Den’s milestone, Interim Deputy Chief Executive Siobhan Callanan presented her with flowers and a card.
