Contraception is probably the last thing you think about while you are pregnant; but did you know you can get pregnant as quickly as 3 weeks after your baby is born!

Have a look at this short video and discuss your preferences with your midwife to ensure we get the right method for you to include in your birth plan.

Some long acting methods are available in the hospital before you are discharged home with your baby.

Introducing the Acorn Birthing Suite.

Located in Inverclyde Maternity Unit, the Acorn Birthing suite provides a "home from home" environment for women with uncomplicated pregnancies.

Our large birthing suite is equipped with a state-of-the-art birthing pool and en-suite facilities.

We have mood lighting and a sound system should you choose to bring your own music. We have a range of aids available including TENS machines, birthing balls and our birthing system

Intermittent auscultation is promoted allowing you the freedom to be fully mobile.

Due to the intimate nature of our birthing unit, we can accommodate most requests for multiple birth supporters and visiting for family members.

The average length of stay following the birth of your baby is 4-6 hours. Our team of midwives will offer support with all aspects of infant feeding and practical parenting skills.

Should you feel the need to stay longer we have a comfortable postnatal room available.

If you like to consider birthing your baby within our maternity unit, please discuss with your midwife at your next appointment or contact us on : 01475 504619 to arrange a visit.

We look forward to welcoming you and your family.

At the Royal Alexandra Consultant Led Labour Ward (CLU) we have worked hard to provide a calm and relaxed environment for you to birth your baby.

If Continuous Fetal Monitoring is required, we have wireless CTG monitoring available in all of our birthing rooms which provides the opportunity for freedom of movement. This monitoring can also be submerged in water – which allows you to make use of our large corner baths for pain relief during labour.

We are able to provide tools such as birthing balls, bean bags and a CUB chair to facilitate a wide range of positions and promote the use of these.

Recently we have invested in Bluetooth enabled speakers which also provide a beautiful sparkly light projection to add to the atmosphere
