🏁 Client Case Study: Supporting Hyrox Training

Our coach Gemma has been deep in preparation for her upcoming Hyrox event in Glasgow this weekend, and over the past month she’s been coming in regularly for sports massage as part of her recovery plan.

With the intensity of Hyrox training, recovery is just as important as the workouts. During Gemma’s sessions we focused on releasing tension and supporting muscle recovery in the areas taking the biggest load from her training.

💪 Key areas we worked on:
• Hamstrings
• Calves
• Quads
• Glutes
• Shoulders and neck (to relieve upper body tension from sled work and functional training)

By incorporating regular massage alongside her training, Gemma has noticed faster recovery between sessions and reduced muscle tightness, helping her stay consistent with her programme in the lead-up to race day.

Recovery isn’t just a luxury during intense training blocks — it’s a vital part of performance.

Good luck this weekend Gemma, we’re all rooting for you! 🙌

That stubborn ache in your lower back…
The sharp “tweak” when you bend or stand up…
The tightness after lifting heavier at the gym…

It might not be what you think.

Meet the Quadratus Lumborum (QL) — a deep abdominal muscle that helps with side bending (lateral flexion) and spinal extension. When this muscle becomes overloaded or irritated, it can create persistent discomfort that doesn’t resolve with general stretching alone.

After a thorough assessment, I don’t just treat the sore spot — I address the surrounding support system too. By working the glute max, side body, latissimus dorsi and erector spinae, and using a combination of targeted myofascial stripping and PNF stretching, we can effectively reduce tension and restore proper movement.

If you’ve been:
✔️ Increasing your training loads
✔️ Sitting for long periods
✔️ Feeling that lingering “niggle” in your back

Your QL could be asking for attention.

Don’t wait for it to become a bigger issue.

Stop scrolling — if your lower back has been whispering (or screaming) at you, this is for you. 🤍

As a massage therapist, I’m used to helping others out of pain… but after my own back injury forced me to take time off, I had to finally practice what I preach.

These slow, mindful movements and gentle breaths have become part of my healing. No forcing. No pushing. Just softening, creating space through the spine, and allowing the fascia in my lower back to gradually release.

Recovery has humbled me in the best way — reminding me that slowing down isn’t weakness, it’s wisdom.

Save this for later and come back when your body needs a reset.

Showing Coach Gemma’s calves some well-deserved TLC.

The gastrocnemius and soleus are essential for push-off, speed, jumping, ankle stability, and endurance. Regular calf massage helps improve circulation, reduce tightness and soreness, boost mobility, and support injury prevention—especially around the Achilles.

If you train, run, or want stronger legs and calves: don’t skip your lower-leg care. Strengthen them, stretch them, and recover properly.

And if your calves are tight, sore, or overdue some hands-on recovery, get in touch with Marie McGhee Massage Therapy five.gates

💥 Client shout-out to Adele! 💥

Adele is an active member of Five Gates and has been absolutely smashing it in the small group PT classes 💪🔥
On top of that, she recently completed an incredible month-long challenge of running 2k every day in support of SANDS charity 👏🏃‍♀️💙 — amazing commitment for an amazing cause.

Adele came in today for a targeted leg sports massage, focusing on tension through the achilles, gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior muscles. Using myofascial stripping, neuromuscular techniques, and PNF stretching through the calves, hamstrings, and quads, we worked to ease tightness and support recovery.

It’s great to see Adele prioritising her recovery — sports massage is a powerful tool to aid recovery, reduce tension, and keep the body performing at its best 🙌

Keep up the fantastic work, Adele! 👏✨ five.gates

Targeted shoulder massage can make a powerful difference to pain, tension, and restricted movement.
This treatment focuses on releasing trigger points, myofascial stripping through the rhomboids and rotator cuff, and PNF stretching of the trapezius — helping your neck feel longer, lighter, and far more relaxed.

If you’re dealing with tight shoulders, neck discomfort, or training-related tension, this is your sign to prioritise your body.
Book your next sports massage with Marie McGhee Massage Therapy and feel the difference.
