The Sunny Baby Co.

The Sunny Baby Co. As a mum of two hypnobirthed babies, I know from experience that mindful hypnobirthing can make a huge difference to your birthing experience.

I believe that happy parents make happy babies, and this begins with hypnobirthing, giving you and your birth partner the tools and skills to birth your baby calmly and without fear. I will teach you simple, powerful and effective techniques which will help you to have a positive experience, regardless of your circumstances during pregnancy, labour and birth. Using simple and practical self-hypnosis, mindfulness and relaxation techniques, as well as an understanding of your hormones and emotions of birth, you and your partner will learn what you need to know if you want to feel really prepared for your baby’s arrival in a calm and focused way. The Mindful Hypnobirthing class teaches you how to quickly and easily access a state of deep relaxation which will help you to reduce any fear and anxiety you are holding onto, bringing you instead into a calm and confident, positive mindset which allows you to work with your body to give birth. This is done using knowledge about your body’s incredible natural hormones which make labour and birth safer and more painless. I’ll also teach your chosen birth partner how important their role is in being an active participant and advocate for you during labour and birth. We’ll talk about the ways that you can create the best possible environment to welcome your new baby confidently, peacefully and without stress. Together, we’ll ensure that you and your family have the best possible birth experience, one that is memorable, calm and positive. You can choose private one-to-one sessions or take part in a group setting with up to five couples. The course is structured as two three-hour sessions but can be adapted to suit you. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, all classes are delivered online for now.

Sleep and food - possibly the two thorniest, most stress inducing, most talked about and most debated subjects when it comes to parenthood and babies. Two basic biological functions that occupy our thoughts from day one…

And two things that are broken down and explained so beautifully in episodes 21 and 22 of the podcast Child, with . I love the way she explains the physiological processes of babies’ sleep and eating delevelopment, framed in the context of modern day lifestyles and consumerism. When you strip it all back to basics, it becomes clear that we need to listen to our instincts and observe our babies more.

Listening to these brought back a lot of emotions and memories for me. Looking back on this phase of motherhood, there’s a lot I would probably do differently, but also a lot I wouldn’t change.

And the takeaway message from it all - different things work for different people and we’re all just doing our best…

A wee trip to the movies tonight to watch - a beautiful portrait of home birth full of stories of the benefits of birthing your baby in a place where you feel safe, private and unobserved. Whilst it may not be for everyone, there are huge pluses to staying at home to give birth, not least that you get to jump into your own bed immediately afterward with a cup of tea and some toast (the best ever)…

If you’re interested in home birth, this is a great way to educate yourself. Check it out in a cinema near you…

Why do so many people choose to labour and birth in water?

The warm water in a bath or birthing pool can bring a huge amount of relief from the sensations of labour, a sense of buoyancy and lightness. You have enough room in a pool or a good sized bathtub, or indeed a shower, to move around instinctively, listening to your body and finding a comfortable position to see you through each contraction. Warm water poured on your belly or a shower directed over your shoulders and back can bring sweet relief.

And when your baby arrives, it’s the most gentle watery transition from womb to world - one dark, warm, wet space to another - before you slowly raise him or her to the surface to take a first breath of air. And because baby is still receiving oxygen through the umbilical cord, you can totally take your time doing that - enjoying the birth pause as you transition from pregnancy to parenthood, forever transformed as you are born as a parent.

These words by are just the perfect way to sum up the process of writing birth preferences.

When you’re dealing with an unpredictable reality - and let’s face it, almost everything about the birth of a baby is the very definition of unpredictability - you’re much better to consider all your options and express informed wishes rather than write a concrete plan. That way, no matter what twists and turns your experience takes, you can take the spirit of your wishes along the way and you’re far less likely to be disappointed if your detailed plan goes a bit awry. Flexibility and preparation are key to a positive experience…

“The woman in labour must have NO STRESS placed upon her. She must be free to move about, walk, rock, go to the bathroom by herself, lie on her side or back, squat or kneel, or anything she finds comfortable, without fear of being scolded or embarrassed. Nor is there any need for her to be either “quiet” or “good”.”

Grantly Dick-Read was a pioneer of natural and fear-free childbirth. He wrote about how vitally important it is to be calm, active and free when in labour. A combination of uninhibited and in control. So even if you and your baby are being monitored, it’s good to find a way to move around if you can.

Often credited as the “inventor” of hypnobirthing, Marie Mongan’s wise words form the basis of my belief in the power of language, emotions and knowledge when it comes to pregnancy and birth. As I’ve said before, I don’t promise a pain-free birth experience, but I do try and equip my clients with the power of knowledge, confidence and calm to give them a fear-free birth experience. Because as we know, fear leads to tension and tension leads to pain, and pain leads to fear. And round we go. So eliminating fear is the first step. To do that, we change the way we view birth.

Did you know?

Human embryos develop with an egg sac.

1950s pregnancy tests involved injecting female toads with a woman’s urine. The toad was put in a jar of water and would lay eggs if the woman was pregnant.

Ultrasound was first used in pregnancy by a Scottish obstetrician who compared a fetus in a womb to a submarine under the ocean, “both voyaging vessels adrift in a dark sea”.

These are just three things that I learned listening to this amazing new podcast, Child, presented by . Each 15 minute episode tells a story about conception, pregnancy, birth and motherhood. It’s fascinating and well worth a listen…

How will I cope with hours and hours of contractions when I go into labour?

Let’s reframe… A contraction lasts around 60-90 seconds. It rises like a wave, peaks at the top and then falls away. Some time passes, and then another one comes. As your labour progresses, the contractions don’t get any longer, they just get closer together so the rest period in between them gets shorter.

By staying mindful and focusing in on the present moment in time rather than worrying about what’s to come in the future, you can deal with each contraction in turn and then really rest, relax and conserve your energy in between them. And you’ll find that the 60-90 seconds pass faster than you thought they would. On to the next… and you’re one contraction closer to meeting your baby…
