Anxiety. We all feel anxious from time to time. It's not a nice feeling and we all want it to go away as quickly as possible. Sometimes it's a normal, if unpleasant and unhelpful, reaction to a stressful situation which dissipates as the situation changes and resolves. However, according to Anxiety UK, in a recent survey they found that a massive 49.6% of the UK population report living with high levels of anxiety.

The mind and body are closely connected so, unfortunately, if you are living with high levels of stress and anxiety this can have a negative effect on your physical health, in particular your nervous, cardiovascular, digestive immune and respiratory systems. Anxiety can lead to sleep problems, high blood pressure, stomach problems and headaches. But did you know if can also cause less well known problems such as weight gain, unexplained aches and pains, frequent urination and a weakened immune response.

However, it's not all doom and gloom. It is possible to take positive steps to reduce your anxiety levels and by doing so improve your physical health and wellbeing. These include breath work, mindfulness, yoga and, of course, hypnotherapy. As a qualified nurse, yoga teacher, wellness life coach and hypnotherapist I work collaboratively with my clients to help them create their own goals and move towards a happy and healthy lifestyle in both mind and body. I have had a wee break from social media the last few weeks due to a family bereavement, and life just being.... life. Full of stuff that needed doing yesterday, people to contact, jobs to do. You know the score... And I have found myself lacking in energy and enthusiasm, even for the things that I love. It's a good reminder that life can always throw us a curved ball and of how important it is for us to take time to look after ourselves and give ourselves time to rest and recuperate. So this week I am going to make sure that I carve out time to do things that I love, to spend time with loved ones and focus on the good things in my life. In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy we would call these the three Ps - positive activities, positive interactions and positive thinking. So, tomorrow I am off up the hills on a pack walk with my hubby and our dog, Belle. Can't wait! Then I will be refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to get back to work - with very achy legs I would imagine....

Sometimes if we are feeling sad, angry or anxious we can start to feel frustrated with ourselves and with our emotions. "I don't want to feel like this!" we think. "Why can't these unpleasant feelings just go away?!" This can be particularly difficult if there is nothing that terrible happening in our lives. Things are going fairly ok. No disasters. Just the usual day to day stress and strain that we think we should be able to cope with. You might even find yourself telling yourself to "Pull your socks up" or "Stop being self indulgent. Everything is fine" And then we can end up resenting the emotions and ourselves for feeling the way we do.

But often the drip, drip, drip of day to day life can be enough to cause us to feel overwhelmed and miserable. Maybe money is tight, the kids are driving you mad, the new boss at work is really difficult and your work load keeps going up, you've been arguing with your family or your friends and then the car gets a flat tyre. No major disasters but it's enough to send your primitive brain or limbic system into overdrive and we can find ourselves sensitised to every little thing that doesn't go to plan.

There are ways to help to calm our oversensitive brain down. Breathing exercises, exercise, mindfulness, getting out into nature, cuddling our pets, reading a good book - and of course Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.

Did you know that it's perfectly normal to feel uncomfortable, even a bit worried or anxious at times?

Sometimes people feel that they are weak or incapable if they are stressed or anxious when trying to move forward or do something new. This in turn can make them feel inadequate or even depressed as they feel they are failing or will never be the person they want to be.

In reality, all that is happening is that your primitive brain, or limbic system, is trying to keep you safe by warning you of what it thinks is danger. But we don't always have to listen to that part of our brain. It's great if we are about to step out into the road in front of a bus as it will make us jump back instantly without thinking about it. But if we aren't in a life threatening situation we can learn to override that part of our brain so that we can make the changes in our lives that we need and want to. One way of doing this is, rather than trying to make changes in one big leap, to identify small steps and work towards realistic, achievable goals. This way we can deal with feeling a bit uncomfortable rather then feeling totally overwhelmed and giving in before we even start. I've been so happy to be working with Men Matter Scotland providing them with some relaxation and group hypnotherapy sessions. It’s horrible….
Do you suffer from persistent or chronic pain? If you do you are not alone. Did you know that between one-third and one-half of the UK population (just under 28 million adults) are affected by chronic or persistent pain?
Living with persistent pain can affect all areas of your life – from looking after the kids, to walking the dog, keeping up at work, doing the garden or cleaning the house. Even sitting in the car or lying in bed can become a nightmare. It can lead to depression and anxiety and leave you feeling helpless, exhausted and trapped.

Have you had a baby recently? Congratulations! This can be a most wonderful and exciting time for you and your new family.

Sometimes, however, pregnancy and birth doesn’t go to plan and we can find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, anxious and depressed; our life has changed forever and we may feel we have lost part of ourselves. Or we may feel isolated and lonely. Then, to add insult to injury, we may start to feel guilty or like we are not a ‘good’ parent.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help to shift those negative thoughts and feelings and help you to feel better. It can help you see things from a different perspective and learn how to relax into your new role as mum to a precious little human being.

Sometimes I am asked if whether by focusing on the positives during a therapy session we are suppressing difficult emotions or pretending that life isn't stressful at times. This isn't the case at all. It's very important to acknowledge that life can be hard and that difficult emotions are real. It's totally normal to have periods of time when we feel sad, angry, anxious, jealous etc. However, by focusing on the positives rather than the negatives, we can build resilience so that when those hard times arrive with those difficult emotions in tow we are better able to keep things in perspective and weather the storm.

The science behind this is that, when we work on keeping a positive frame of mind, it helps to reduce the level of stress hormones in the body and boost the production of the happy, feel good hormones like oxytocin and serotonin, which then in turn impacts how we feel and can turn a downward spiral into an upward spiral.

So when we ask "What's been good?" during a therapy session we aren't trying to gloss over difficulties or ignore those negative feelings. We are working with neuroscience to help you to turn things around and move into a happier, calmer space with a clear mind to enable you to make the right decisions and start to create the life you would like to have.

I am now able to offer therapy sessions from their beautiful treatment rooms and, as this is a new venture, I am offering sessions on a sliding scale basis.
