How a Guatemalan doll is helping children recover from the Manchester Arena attack

A Guatemalan traditional legend about a doll is being used to help young children who were affected by the Manchester Arena attack. The dolls are part of the therapies being offered by the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Peace Foundation, an organisation set up nearly 25 years ago to support victims and survivors of terrorism.

The worry dolls are used by the Foundation’s caseworkers to help children to deal with their fears following their appalling experiences resulting from the attack outside the Manchester Arena. They are part of the Foundation’s proprietary clinical health approach called SENSE (see below).

The Foundation gives each child a bag of dolls as part of their support.

The Worry dolls allow children to share their sorrow, fears and worries and then hide it under the pillow at night The child sleeps ‘over the doll’ and by the morning the feelings are taken away. Worry dolls are used in child psychiatry.

When caseworkers work with children, they use a worry doll as an imaginary and trustworthy “listener.” The doll works as a ‘bridge’ between the child and adult.

The origin of the Worry Dolls (Worry People) refers to a Mayan princess named Ixmucane. The princess received a special gift from the sun god which would allow her to solve any problem a human could worry about.

The power of these simple dolls is why we've created our own version of 'Worry Dogs'

Anxiety is epidemic with children and young people.

At our therapy practice Brave Your Day, we have noticed a steep increase in referrals for therapeutic support.

We find so many young people, especially teenagers, are coming in with fears and worries about the future and going to uni and getting jobs.

You have to be able to stay alongside them with that.

We appreciate adult instinct is to cheer them up or distract them, mainly because their vulnerabilities trigger ours.

It's important to understand trying to give them a solution just invalidates their experience.

Our approach is to work with them to find their own words, vocabularly and voice to express what they are feeling or thinking to make meaning for themselves.

Powerful !

We've discovered something as simple as a small felt dog can be something to carry, nurture and talk to when our minds are full of worries.

Hello I'm Charley and the creator of 'Worry Dogs'.

I've been a therapist with girls and women for over 30 years.
I was on the team that set up ChildLine in Scotland back in 1990! I went onto work for Save the children and Women's Aid.

Personally, anxiety and fear has dogged me all my childhood and some of my adult life.

Dogs have always been my anchor. I love them.
They are incredibly unconditional and great listeners! (Ha ha ha they don't answer back or try to give me advice)

I started making these pups during the pandemic to relax myself and reconnect with my creative side.

Feedback from Mums, Dads, Aunties, Friends, neighbours...has been phenomenal !

So simple yet so calming!

Here's my dog 'Wee Kate the border collie' and me with the Worry Dogs!

Now 15% of any sale goes towards free or reduced fee counselling & therapeutic coaching with girls/women.
