Does resistance training influence mortality rate and increase the chance of living longer?

This recent systematic review definitely suggests so! It found that undertaking any amount of regular resistance training reduced the chance of cancer mortality by 14%, cardiovascular disease mortality by 19% and mortality of any-cause by 14%.

I think it is safe to say if you want to live longer, resistance training (at home or in the gym) definitely increases your chances. 💪💪💪

TMJ dysfunction can be incredibly painful and there are a wide range of symptoms that people don’t commonly associate with this joint.

Symptoms include:
- Migraines
- Headaches
- Teeth grinding
- Jaw clicking and pain
- Pain when speaking or eating
- Neck pain
- Restricted mouth opening
- Jaw locking

I am currently one of the TMJ specialists within the NHS regularly carrying out detailed oral assessments to diagnose jaw pain. Based on this I use a range of techniques specific to each client including hands on treatment, advice and a tailored exercise program.

Most people worldwide will experience back pain at some stage during their lifetime. Back pain can be worrying and even disabling but it is rarely dangerous.

The spine is a strong, stable structure and is not easily damaged. Avoiding bed rest along with gradually returning to normal activities and exercise will help you on your way. However, if your back pain does not clear up and you are worried, don’t suffer in silence!

The general population will know running is linked with great cardiovascular and mental health benefits however most believe you are more likely to develop arthritis. There is no evidence to support this! In fact running was found to strengthen bones 🦴and muscles 💪helping to support joints, as well as improve cartilage and synovial health.

Returning to running after an injury is dependent on strength, load management and conditioning. If you are struggling to get back to running drop me a message and together we can create an appropriate training programme.

Ongoing knee pain can be a frustrating time for any young athlete, especially with reoccurrence!

An early diagnosis and guided rehab will help to reduce the likelihood of knee pain worsening over a long period of time.

Hi everyone I am Matthew from Back to Fitness Physiotherapy. 😁

I continue to work as a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist within the NHS and have done over the last 8 years. The last 3 years I expanded my role to become a TMJ / jaw pain specialist.

I have also spent the last 6 years at Celtic Football club leading clinics and advanced sports rehab. This includes the assessment and management of professional athletes from 10 years to adults.
