HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! ๐ŸŽˆ

This week marks 1 year since I left a partnership and started my own psychology practice. This quickly became a limited company and I am very pleased to work with a team of people who are as passionate about supporting mental health as I am.

To celebrate, we have two positions available for children and young people's therapists! If you know of anyone who is interested, please send them our job advertisement via indeed.

Quite often we put should's and conditions on our children that can really harm their self esteem. 'You've been a bad boy, so go away until you calm down'; 'You should have tried harder'; 'Look at that boy behaving well and look at you misbehaving'. These 'shoulds' carry into adulthood and result in a fixed view of others and experience.

Today Mr Penguin and Ducky have been teaching the children how to 'respond' with warmth, acceptance and splash of confidence instead in their communications. If we don't show children how to do it, how else will they know?

The Power of Play!

This week during our parenting sessions, we have been educating parents over the role of play in a child's communication and their development. A child will tell you how they see the world, or what is difficult for them in their play.

Here we use the sand tray to illustrate key skills in 'observation, following, and non-directivity', which allows a child to feel value and esteem, develop skills in problem solving and regulate difficult emotions.

Some key things to consider when playing:
1. Observe not lead - ' I notice the lady is lying down and the man is standing'.
2. Think Aloud - 'I wonder what the children are doing?'
3. Praise the effort not the outcome-'I can see that you tried really hard to keep the sand in the tray'.
4. Non-direction - 'I'm not sure what to do next, do you have any ideas?'

Regardless of age, don't be afraid to let your children tell you how to do it!

Have a playful Wednesday!
