Red weather warning: important notice

Following the red weather warning, non-urgent outpatient appointments and routine hospital admissions scheduled for Friday 24th January are being cancelled.

We apologise for the inconvenience, but in view of the travel advice from Police Scotland, do not wish to risk patients travelling for non-urgent care.

Urgent and emergency care and essential maternity and community services will continue to be provided.

If you are affected, we will reschedule your appointment as soon as possible.

All vaccination clinics due to take place on Friday 24th January have been cancelled and appointments will be rescheduled.

We are contacting patients this afternoon and evening but would be grateful if you could share this information with any friends or family who may be affected.

Respiratory viruses such as colds and flu are peaking right now.

Most cough, cold and flu symptoms result from common winter viruses. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, so rather than calling your GP, the best advice is to stay at home and take traditional over-the-counter remedies.

Remember that these viruses can spread quickly, so only go out if absolutely necessary. Please do not attend A&E with flu symptoms.

You can check your symptoms and decide what to do next by visiting NHS Inform or the NHS 24 app. If you think your condition is more serious, please call your GP practice or NHS 24 on 111.

For more information on accessing the care most appropriate for your needs, and for details of GP practice and pharmacy opening times over the festive season, go to: https://www.nhsggc.scot/your-health/right-care-right-place/

GP practices will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and again on New Year’s Day and 2nd January.

🔹 If you need medicines regularly, please think ahead to ensure you have an appropriate supply of your repeat prescriptions. Routine medications will not be issued by the GP Out of Hours service.
🔹 The GP Out of Hours service is by-appointment only. If you require urgent medical attention and cannot wait until your GP practice reopens after the Christmas and New Year bank holidays please contact NHS 24 on 111.
🔹 A number of community pharmacies will be open on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and on Hogmanay, New Year’s Day and 2nd January. However, many of these will operate reduced opening hours, which can be found by visiting https://www.nhsggc.scot/your-health/right-care-right-place/pharmacy/pharmacy-opening-hours-new-year-24-25/

Our Accident & Emergency departments are very busy right now. A&E is intended for life-threatening conditions and the most serious injuries. In such cases, people should call 999 or go to A&E immediately.

Unless you have a serious injury or your condition is life-threatening, A&E is not the best place to go.

There are quicker ways for you to access the care you need if you’re feeling unwell or have a minor injury, and they avoid sitting in an A&E waiting room. You should phone 111 for advice after which you will be advised on the best care for you at that moment. This includes a call from a GP, an appointment at one of our virtual A&E, Minor Injuries Units, Emergency Dental appointments, or a GP Out of Hours appointment.
