❀πŸ”₯❀πŸ”₯❀πŸ”₯A Beginner's Guide to Shadow Work: Understanding and Integrating Your Shadow Self, Part II❀πŸ”₯❀πŸ”₯❀πŸ”₯

Your hidden self, also known as your shadow, just wants acknowledgment. It's a part of you, even if you don't like to admit it. The shadow craves love and acceptance, yearning to be recognised as part of your whole self.

Contrary to popular belief, the shadow isn't inherently evil; it's just different. It's an integral part of who you are, whether you embrace it or not. Embracing and accepting all aspects of yourself is key to healing your psyche.

Recognising your shadow isn't straightforward since it operates unconsciously. However, there are ways to identify it indirectly:
Start with a simple meditation every day. 5 minutes of everyday practice will surprise you with positive results, and very likely you will quickly extend the time of your meditation and alter it to your preference, daily schedule, and deeper needs.
If you feel a bit sceptical about meditation or think that it's only for super-engaged spiritualists, this BBC short documentary will give you some information about what the world of science has discovered about meditation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi9Xvh-Dva4
Meditation teaches you to become more present in the now; it teaches your body to create space. This space will be your temple for relaxation and healing.

Pay attention to fleeting daydreams during meditation. These thoughts often stem from the unconscious and can reveal hidden aspects of yourself. It might be tempting to push them away, as these thoughts can be uncomfortable, but stay present with them without overthinking. Just watch them. Learning to be an observer in your meditation will allow you to see your inner world from a different perspective.

Your dreams may feature threatening figures representing your shadow. They typically embody qualities you need to integrate into your waking life.
Identifying shadows through journaling. Journaling provides a very safe and supportive environment to delve into our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By setting aside dedicated time to write, we create a space where we can honestly explore aspects of ourselves that we may not typically confront in our daily lives. Through introspection, we can ask probing questions like "What am I afraid of?" or "What triggers my insecurities?" or When did I first start feeling this way?" or "What experiences in my past may have contributed to this belief or behaviour?"

By understanding the events or circumstances that shaped these aspects of ourselves, we gain insight into why they exist and how they continue to influence us.

Triggers, or exaggerated emotional responses to certain qualities in others, can indicate aspects of your shadow that you've rejected. Now, this is the big one, and I personally found triggers to be the best teachers in my shadow work journey. In psychology, a β€œtrigger” is a stimulus that causes a painful memory to resurface. A trigger can be any sensory reminder of the traumatic event: a sound, sight, smell, physical sensation, or even a time of day or season. But the trigger can also be somebody's behaviour or words. Whenever you find yourself uncomfortable in a certain situation, your emotional response is an indication of your shadow.
E.g. Is there someone in your life you particularly dislike? If the answer is yes, welcome your favourite teacher on this journey. This person triggers a powerful shadow hidden in you, and your job is to ask yourself questions. What is it I dislike about this person? What qualities of this person trigger anger within me? Have I ever acted this way? Have I ever been harshly criticised for this kind of behaviour? Ask many questions until the path clears up and you receive answers.

Whatever comes up to the surface, greet it and give it love. If the process becomes painful and you don't get clear answers right away, don't worry. Say to yourself, I love you, and I accept you because we are one'. Exploring hidden parts of yourself and learning to love them and integrate them into your whole being takes time and commitment. Use it as an opportunity to practice compassion towards yourself.

Notice what makes you laugh uncontrollably; it could reveal repressed desires or thoughts.

Body language, slips of the tongue, and reactions to others' successes can also hint at your shadow's presence. If the feeling of envy appears in your day, ask yourself before or after your meditation, e.g.,. Why am I jealous of this person's success? How am I doing in terms of self-esteem? Do I feel like a failure in any area of my life? Do I undervalue myself? What would I tell myself in response to this trigger? Here, we are looking for an honest answer, even if it's a very mean, harsh, and agresive inner critic. This is the voice you want to engage with and have a conversation with.
It is very crucial to constantly remind yourself that our shadows are the parts of us that need to be accepted with an open heart. This has to be a genuine, compassionate, and loving transformation. It requires us to connect with vulnerability in a very authentic way. Remember, it's only you who's watching, so don't be afraid or ashamed of anything you discover.

Practice positive affirmations, preferably immediately after waking up. Search YouTube for morning affirmations and find something that resonates with you. I personally love Jessica Heslop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QudqAIVBVr8) because of her loving and warm voice, but it's rather a preference, so I strongly encourage you to do your own research.

I cannot fully explain how liberating and beautiful this feeling is once you integrate your first, even the smallest shadow. It gives you a powerful motivation boost, and you just want to dive deeper into this adventure of self-exploration.

Shadow work, a practice of exploring and accepting your unconscious self, can take various forms, including journaling, active imagination, and affirmations. Consistent shadow work can lead to wholeness, allowing you to access your full potential and live authentically. Balancing the ego and shadow isn't contradictory but rather a paradox that leads to a healthy, fulfilled life.
