What a great pleasure it was to deliver a joint ‘Grand Rounds’ and then workshop with my father Dr Alan Gow on ‘An Introduction to Medical Hypnosis’ to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine. I have long wanted to give a joint presentation with my dad who initially sparked my interest in hypnosis with I was about 12 years old! Mahalo!

Today is the 750th anniversary of the birth of my 20x great grandfather - Robert The Bruce! The Scottish King famously gained inspiration from watching a spider repeatedly attempt to spin a web - not giving up despite many failures until it was done. Against all the odds Robert the Bruce would go on to lead the Scots into a famous victory at Bannockburn.

It came as a wonderful surprise to learn that I had been awarded the ‘Kay F. Thomson Award for Clinical Excellence in Dentistry’ at the XXII World Congress of Medical and Clinical Hypnosis Gala dinner, presented by Camilo Loredo and Bernhard Trenkle . It’s still sinking in to be honest! A true honour to be among a few who have had this award from The International Society of Hypnosis . While I was not fortunate enough to have ever met Kay in person, one of my earliest mentors, Dr James Auld was her friend and was very much influenced by her teachings, as is also true of one of my current mentors and good friend Dr Gabor Filo. Kay’s influence and inspiration therefore lives on and will continue to do so through the sharing of knowledge and techniques. To receive an award with her name, knowing what I know about her, makes it all the more special.
