The summer holidays are nearly over and it’s time to get ready for going back to school!

Following on from yesterday’s post about choosing the correct shoes here are a few tips to remember when buying school shoes. Many adult foot problems come from wearing ill-fitting shoes, so it’s really important to make sure children wear shoes that fit well and give their feet good support. Things to look out for include:

✔️A good fastening. Look for a T-bar, buckle, Velcro strap or laces that will hold the shoe securely.
✔️A durable sole with a well-designed tread pattern so the shoe doesn’t slip.
✔️A wide base that gives stability. Too narrow a sole can lead to ankle sprains.
✔️A supportive heel cup to hold the foot in place without being too rigid.
✔️A natural or breathable man-made material so air can circulate around the feet.
✔️Flexibility at the front of the shoe with enough room for your child to move their feet comfortably.
✔️A dark colour, such as black, so you don’t have to worry about the dirt.

Regularly check your child’s feet and all their shoes to make sure there are no issues. Children need new shoes if their toes touch the end of the shoes or the heels or tread are worn down. Younger kids are growing all the time so they might need their shoes replaced a few times a year. Teenagers are more likely to wear their shoes out rather than outgrow them.

Good luck with the school uniform shopping everyone. At least you’ve almost survived another summer with the kids!

Choosing the right shoes for your feet is really important. Here are some tips to make sure you pick the correct shoes to keep your feet happy and healthy:

👣 Natural materials are best as this reduces sweating.
👣 Avoid high heels and shoes that don’t match the shape of your foot.
👣 Extra wide shoes are great for those who experience swollen feet or bunions.
👣 Make sure you try on both shoes as people often have slightly different sized feet.
👣 Buy footwear in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest.
👣 Wear new shoes around the house first and check for any redness or marks.
👣 Custom insoles can help balance the body and reduce the pressure on the sole of the foot. When buying new shoes test your insoles to make sure there is enough room to accommodate both your foot and the insole comfortably.

We can help with any foot related issues you may be experiencing. Give us a call and we can get you booked in for an appropriate appointment:

Do you include your feet in your skincare regime?

The skin on your feet is 10 times thicker than anywhere else on your body, so they need a dedicated foot emollient to ensure the skin is well moisturised. Apply all over your feet, but avoid between the toes as this can lead to fungal infections.

If you are suffering from dry, cracked skin on your feet we can help. Just give us a call and we can book you in for an appropriate appointment:

What causes trauma to a nail?

A trauma is anything that causes damage to the nail bed. Some things that can cause this include:
☑️ Sports activities such as running or football
☑️ Something hitting the nail
☑️ Badly-fitting footwear
☑️ Someone standing on the nail
☑️ Minor repetitive pressure
☑️ Picking the nail

Some of these traumas will cause instant damage to the nail, while others will gradually develop over time. The result is that the nail usually appears thickened, sometimes with an underlying blood blister. Once the nail bed is damaged the nail tends to grow thicker. We can help manage the discomfort and appearance of thickened toenails, so please get in touch with us and we can book you in for an appropriate appointment:
