Women on Wheels Hub

Women on Wheels Hub Women on Wheels (SCIO) is a community cycling hub for women. The world of everyday cycling is dominated by a white male demographic.

A service designed and led by women, we deliver a range of cycling activities to get women back on a bike or onto a bike for the very first time. It is much less common for women to cycling for transport and leisure, especially women of colour. Our mission is to empower and enable women to overcome their barriers to take up cycling - for transport, to improve their physical and mental health, and

most importantly, for the pure joy of it! Follow us on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/women_wheels/

I love my bike, it's that sense of freedom.

Sometimes it can be tricky in traffic.

But I love getting out and into the fresh air.

Up for a fun day out mountain biking in Cathkin Braes?🚵‍♀

No need to be a pro - this is a fabulous session for those who have tried mountain biking before (perhaps you have given it a go at one of our sessions to Balfron, Pollok or Linn Park) and are looking to have fun on the trails with other likeminded women and non-binary folks.

The session is led by a qualified MTB coach and is pay as you can £1-30.

How common is abuse on our roads? We ran a poll on Instagram and the results are alarming 👇

Next week we will be back to sharing all the fun and joy that cycling brings, but rest assured - we are still working tirelessly behind the scenes to make a difference and do our bit to make abuse on the roads an issue of the past. We hope you'll join us in taking action ✊🚲💜

We recently received this voice note from one of the women in our community. An amazing woman who had built her cycling confidence and was now inspiring other women to get out on bikes. A real advocate. But the abuse is taking away her joy. It’s heartbreaking. And worse, it’s not a unique experience. Abuse on our roads forces far too many women to quit cycling altogether.

Her story matters and so does yours. This week we are taking action on abuse and we encourage you to do the same. Small actionable steps go a long way:

🚲 Demand better of our politicians. Don’t forget to vote on the 7th May. Check out our last post for details on active travel commitments.

🚲 Use your voice - to share your story or to start conversations with colleagues, family members or friends. Human connections are essential to enabling change.

🚲 Call out abusive behaviour. Whether you report anti-cyclists comments in online forums or speak up when you witness abuse in our public spaces, your actions matter.

🚲 Join or support your local cycling communities. We are hosting Kidical Mass on 31 May and you can join us in highlighting the need for safer streets for kids. Because safe streets for kids are safe streets for all.

🚲 Ride your bike. You are already creating change by sharing joy as you cycle.

Investing in active travel is essential to addressing abuse on our roads. We need:
🚲 Safe and well connected cycling infrastructure.
🚲 Behaviour change projects to increase participation, improve attitudes and build a cycling culture.

Investing in active travel also helps address some of the key crises we are facing:

💷 Cost of living crisis (Walking, wheeling and cycling are the most affordable modes of transport - but people need to have the ability and the safe environment to choose these options)
🏥 Health crisis (Physical inactivity is associated with 1 in 6 deaths in the UK and is estimated to cost the UK £7.4 billion annually - active travel helps people incorporate physical activity into their daily routines reducing pressure and costs on the NHS)
🌍 Climate crisis (Replacing car journeys with active travel help reduce emissions and lower pollution levels)

Before you vote on Thursday, learn more about what the parties intend to deliver on active travel (spoiler alert - it's less than we had hoped) 👇

“F*** off the road” shouldn’t be a common phrase but it is.

If you’re a cyclist in Scotland you will likely have heard the words at some point in your life. It might even have been accompanied by the finger and some atrocious driving making you hold onto your bike for dear life.

When it happens we are told to brush it off, take it in our stride and just ignore it. But brushing it off doesn’t change the root problem. It normalises a problem that is far from normal. Somehow we’ve created an environment and a culture where some road users feel more entitled to the roads than others. Like they belong while others don’t. This entitlement leads to road rage and abuse. Because how dare cyclists take up space on roads that don’t belong to them?

We believe one of the major contributing factors to this abusive culture is that city planners - and society in general - have for too long prioritised cars over people. Buildings and communities have been demolished to make way for wider streets and heavy-traffic motorways. Just look at the M8 and how it breaks up Glasgow. A car-centric city has become the norm making some people view other modes of transport as “less than”.

Yet, it doesn’t have to be this way. We can make change if we stop accepting abuse as the norm. We need to ditch the ‘brush it off’ attitude and tackle the issues head on. We need to redistribute road space, giving space back to people. But simply building new active travel infrastructure isn’t enough. We need behaviour change initiatives and we need people to come together to address this abusive culture which makes our public spaces feel unsafe. Especially to women and children.

The task ahead might feel overwhelming, but there are small actionable steps each and everyone of us can take to enable this change:

🚲 Demand better of our politicians. Don’t forget to vote on the 7th May. We are currently scrutinising the various manifestos and will let you know which parties prioritise active travel initiatives.

You can let us know you are coming here: https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/qx7o4MPUegGVK5WvqDdd

🚲 Ride your bike. You are already creating change by sharing joy as you cycle.

Change is possible when we stop accepting things as they are and demand better. We can’t do it on our own. You can’t do it on your own. But together we can make real change. Let’s make it happen.
