Only 8 minutes walk from my Milngavie therapy room, and you could be soothed even further. Why not make a wellbeing morning or afternoon and double up a massage with a beautiful nature walk, for extra bliss ✨️

Occasionally, after a massage, the body may go into a healing state, either physically or mentally.

This isn't because toxins have been released into the body (this doesn't actually happen when you get a massage).

It's known as a healing crisis, or I like to call it a nervous system recalibration.
A bit like coming down with a cold the minute you go on holiday. The body is clever, and it takes its opportunity. There's that saying... if you don't make time for your wellness, you will be forced to take time for your illness. That kind of thing.

I'm here to talk about the emotional side of a healing crisis.
If a person has been under an enormous amount of stress / pressure / has had a bereavement, when the nervous system feels safe, it sometimes releases a lot of repressed emotion. This is normal, and it will pass. And with its passing will also come some processing or letting go. If this happens during or after a session with me, know that you are safe and that I am experienced at holding this space for you.

Another reason why I love bodywork so much.
The body really does keep the score.

The things I write about are based on my experiences with clients every week in my therapy room.

I also received some beautiful verbal feedback from a client I've been seeing for about a year this week. The theme was trust and safety.

Thank you for trusting me with your body πŸ’›

Specific forms of massage therapy have been proven to reduce anxiety and anger among breast cancer patients, alongside longer-lasting improvements like reduced depression and increased NK (natural killer) cell numbers.

When our bodies are stressed, and cancer and its treatments are no doubt stressful, it releases high amounts of cortisol and adrenaline. This causes the muscles to tense up and feel tight. Massage is proven to benefit this by relaxing soft tissue, which enables the tension to disperse. Massage also stimulates the Vagal nerve, which is part of our parasympathetic nervous system. This sends a message through the body which tells it to de-stress and has been shown to improve mood.

Back at the end of 2019 I embarked on an Oncology massage course with

It was a big change; learning about the effects of cancer and its treatments on the body. I didn't feel I had the emotional resilience to fully work with this client group at the time.

I suppprted one woman through all stages of cancer, and she was open enough to allow me to learn with her as she went.
She was an educator herself and an inspiring, strong woman. She taught me so much; to embrace life, to accept the cards you are dealt, to make the most of things, that life is precious.

I remember our last treatment together: Together, we breathed.
I noticed how her anxiety reduced.
She told me afterwards how much she had benefitted from our sessions.
We both knew that would be the last time we saw each other.
I attended her funeral in October last year.

I share this with you as this is simply my experience. I believe I needed to go through this process before I felt ready to offer my massage to others with a cancer diagnosis. I saw how much it helped this person navigate some frightening times.

It taught me to hold space without trying to change things.

I couldn't change things.

The oncology massage is not a modality. It's not a specific style of massage that is going to help change anything to do with a diagnosis.

It is about being fully present with a person and understanding how cancer and its treatments are affecting the individual at this point in their life.
It's about finding ways to make the massage as comfortable as possible for the person to receive.
It's a person centred approach.

Fast fwd a few years, and I asked Rachel from Glasgow School of massage if I could attend the course again.
One of the many great things about doing this course with glasgow school of massage is support / mentoring available from Rachel after you have attended the course. Her approach is professional but relaxed and her knowledge is vast. It was great to be back in the classroom this week I now feel ready, 6 years later, to offer my massages and support those with a cancer diagnosis - once I have completed my case studies.

Mauna Kea Massage & Wellbeing - My Story

Hi I’m Roberta and I’m the founder of Mauna Kea Massage & Wellbeing.

Mauna Kea (maw-nah-kee-yah) is a sacred mountain in Hawaii, over half of which is situated below sea level! Just like our bodies, what we see is above skin level but it’s the complex highway of muscles, connective tissues, nerves, organs and cells below skin level that are benefitting when we receive massage.

I became fascinated with the human body during a particularly stressful period in my life. I noticed how stress manifested in my physical body and I felt drawn to massage and holistic therapies to support myself. I trained as a massage therapist in 2013 and it was the catalyst for my own healing at a deeper level.

Life can bring about all sorts of challenges. Massage and holistic bodywork facilitates ones journey inside. It gives us quiet space to listen to what the body is telling us it needs, (mentally, physically and spiritually) supporting the holistic healing process. The essence of Mauna Kea Massage & Wellbeing is about reaching ones peak; to the highest point of what you personally are looking to achieve. With massage and holistic therapies what is touched at skin or β€˜peak’ level has a fundamental effect on the below sea workings of the human body. At the base of any peak is a strong and resilient foundation. I absolutely love working with people in this way and I cannot wait to help you reach that quiet place in which to nurture your true potential.
