Gone AWOL.
I've been quiet of late,
This has been a difficult post to write.
Partly because the emotions are still quite raw & also because I'm not a huge fan of sharing personal information quite so publicly.
BUT, I think it could be a useful post to highlight some lessons learned from the events that transpired.
A few weeks back we went on a family holiday to Arran for my mum's 60th. We had a week of activities planned with climbing Goat Fell being the main event on my mums birthday.
I briefly posted a story a few days after it happened, but essentially a series of unfortunate events ended up with both my parents being lost on the mountain separately. Fortunately the team came to the rescue and did an outstanding job in airlifting my mum to safety and continuing the search for my dad till late that night.
We were all utterly blindsided on a Monday afternoon.
I couldn't sleep for days going over the turn of events in my mind & how everything went so wrong so quick.
I just wanted to highlight that you can never under estimate outdoor pursuits. It wasn't my parents first rodeo, they are pretty used to going up hills and I wouldn't exactly describe my mother as the reckless type..
Things can go wrong no matter how prepared you think you are. In the past I've seen people tackling mountains without water, proper attire or companions.
So, before you set out:
โฐ Everyone carries a phone - make sure it's charged.
โฐ Wear warm clothes /lots of layers and it might be a good idea to wear bright clothing. Red is the last colour to be seen as it gets dark.
โฐ Each person carries their own supplies - never rely on someone else to carry your stuff in their backpack.
โฐ Check the weather forecast and if the weather changes for the worse, consider turning back.
โฐ You are only as fast as your slowest person - do not split from the rest of your group.
I'm not sure I'll ever go up a hill again without a compass and a flare. It's was pretty dire up there and my mum and dad are so lucky to be alive.
Forever grateful to the AMR Team. If you check out their insta page they're constantly rescuing people off that mountain.
Amazing job folks ๐โค
