Some of the ways healing can feel to those of us who have experienced childhood trauma.

ℹ🌿 THIS IS WHAT IT FEELS LIKE WHEN YOUR BRAIN IS DYSREGULATED FROM CHILDHOOD PTSD |

People who had a rough childhood often go through life feeling — knowing — that they are a little different than most people. It’s common sense that early exposure to violence, addiction, abuse or neglect can have a lifelong effect on mental health and behavior.

“To love someone long-term is to attend a thousand funerals of the people they used to be.”

Such a powerful statement! Leaves me wondering what people from my past lives would make of me if we were to meet again!

I suspect that this need for change, to shed a skin, is often what takes us into counselling. If we grow up in a family that doesn’t support and acknowledge change and transition then it can make it a very challenging process. One that we may not even recognise.

I’m gradually learning to listen for the signs of growth and transition. For myself, I’ve noticed it might begin with anxious feelings, which can bring confusion, maybe along with sadness or anger. I might notice a feeling of being dissatisfied with the way things are, coupled with a need to withdraw from life, to spend more time in nature.

Making changes in our lives involves taking risks, trying out new ways of being in the world. That can be scary.

If we want come home to ourselves, then this is the portal we have to step through in order to reconnect with our authentic self, the self that has been there all along.

Who doesn’t want to feel more creative, spontaneous and juicy!

Facing your fear, making friends with your shadow side, unlocks your creative potential and helps you break through any blocks you might be experiencing. Covering over your shadow - your fear - in order to avoid facing it, blocks you in your creative work. Your creative work is about the expression of your innermost self - which is your shadow. The price we pay for repressing our Shadow is a lack of authenticity.
Our shadow is where the juice is.

It’s really tough and difficult at the moment- we are living through such troubling times.

When our stress reaches a certain level it can feel like being on the fast lane of a motorway, our foot pressed down hard on the accelerator. Correspondingly we may feel busy, perhaps hooked on the news emerging through social media, or feel overwhelmed, angry or distressed.

We forget we can very gently nudge ourselves back into the slower lane and make time and space for ourselves to breathe and slow down.

It’s been a while since I posted here and I wanted to say something about that.

I’ve been working online throughout the pandemic. I trained to be a person to person counsellor and so working online has had its challenges.

Over the last year and a bit I’ve been trying to balance working online with looking after and taking care of myself. Part of that involved not putting pressure on myself to be posting here.

It’s not over yet. Now we have to make the transition into the ‘new normal’ and whatever that means for each of us.

But I am aware of having a little more energy and of things beginning to feel a little easier than they have done for the last year and a half.

Still life on top of laptop. Currently working online in an artificially lit room and reminding myself that’s it’s sunny with a breath of spring outside.
