Your brain can change. Seriously!

Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to rewire and adapt itself throughout your life, forming new connections, strengthening existing ones, and even recovering from challenges.

And for those of us with ADHD or autism? This is kind of a big deal.

It means the brain isn't fixed. It means the struggles you face today aren't permanent. With the right support, strategies, and consistency, your brain can genuinely learn new ways of working — managing focus, regulating emotions, building habits that stick.

It's not about "fixing" yourself. Your brain is not broken. It's about understanding how your brain works and giving it the tools it needs to thrive in the way that's right for you.

Save this one... it's worth coming back to on the hard days.

Deadlines can feel like they appear out of nowhere: distant one moment, urgent the next.

In this week’s guest piece, one of our writers shares their lived experience of ADHD and the familiar cycle of panic, pressure, and “I wish I’d started sooner.” But instead of focusing on guilt, they offer something more practical: a shift in mindset that’s helped them move away from last-minute stress and towards better quality work.

It’s honest, relatable, and a reminder that small steps early on can change everything.

Did you know omega-3 could be one of the most underrated tools for the neurodivergent brain? 🧠✨

Research links omega-3 fatty acids — especially EPA and DHA — to better focus, improved emotional regulation, reduced impulsivity, and sharper working memory. For those with ADHD or autism, where these are often the trickiest areas to manage, that's a pretty big deal.

After years of waiting, many of our patients describe a real sense of relief during their assessment.

For some, it’s the first time they feel truly heard in a medical setting. No judgement. No assumptions. Just space to talk, to be understood, and to make sense of their experience.

“Dr Carmichael was amazing… she listened to my concerns and reassured me that what I was feeling as a parent was normal. She was so good with my son and took time to listen to him…”

This is what matters to us: creating a space where both parents and children feel supported, understood, and respected.

We’re proud to be part of this journey, and to continue providing care that listens first and supports every step of the way.

If you or someone you love has been waiting for answers, we are here. And we will listen.

How does ADHD medication actually work?

ADHD medications work by targeting neurotransmitters in the brain: primarily dopamine and norepinephrine: the chemicals responsible for attention, motivation, and impulse control.

There are two main types:

🔹 Stimulants — boost dopamine levels to improve focus and reduce impulsivity
🔹 Non-stimulants — regulate norepinephrine to support cognitive function, and are a great option for those who don't tolerate stimulants well or have cardiovascular considerations

Both can make a real difference to focus, impulse control, and day-to-day functioning — but here's the important thing: everyone's profile is different. What works brilliantly for one person may need adjusting for another, and that's completely normal.

At ADHD Direct, you won't be navigating that alone. Our experienced clinicians will be with you every step of the way — through titration, any medication changes, and beyond. Every decision made will always be based on what is best for your health and your wellbeing.

“Why do we need your blood pressure?”

It’s a question we’re often asked, and an important one.

When prescribing ADHD medication, your physical health matters. Many medications can affect blood pressure and heart rate, which is why monitoring these regularly helps us keep your treatment safe, effective, and tailored to you.

In line with NICE guidelines, we routinely check blood pressure and pulse before and during treatment. It’s all part of making sure your care is not only effective, but safe.

We also recommend having a low-cost blood pressure monitor at home, so you can track your readings easily between appointments and stay involved in your care.

Safe, informed, and personalised, that’s how treatment should be.

A lot of people ask us what the point of getting an ADHD assessment is, especially as an adult.

The truth is, ADHD doesn’t disappear with age. It just shows up differently.

An assessment isn’t just about a diagnosis. It’s about understanding how your brain works, making sense of your experiences, and getting the right support moving forward.

Our assessments include a two-hour consultation with an expert clinician, a comprehensive report, and a clear medication pathway if appropriate — giving you clarity, validation, and a plan for what comes next.

If that ever feels like the right step for you, we are just a click away: www.adhddirect.co.uk
