Did you know that there's a specific phobia called Ommatophobia, an intense fear of eyes that can deeply affect daily life and social interactions?

For those affected, it can include fear of their own eyes, the eyes of others, or even images of eyes.

This phobia can manifest in various ways, including:
- Anxiety or panic attacks when confronted with eyes or eye-related stimuli.
- Avoidance of direct eye contact or situations where eyes would be mainly involved.
- Physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, nausea, or heart palpitations.

Ommatophobia can significantly affect daily life, making social interactions challenging or causing distress in situations where eye interactions are unavoidable, like medical examinations or even looking in the mirror.

Fortunately, treatment options like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and medication can help individuals manage and reduce these fears.

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disorder that affects the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped front surface of the eye. In this condition, the cornea gradually thins and bulges into a cone-like shape, leading to visual distortions and potential vision impairment.

One of the remedies for keratoconus is corneal cross-linking (CXL), a treatment designed to prevent progression of corneal weakness. In many cases, this procedure prevents the condition from worsening, and in some instances it could facilitate significant improvement in vision.

The best part is, corneal cross-linking is available at Optimax. The procedure is minimally invasive, it's pain-free, and the resulting increased strength of the cornea inhibits the progression of keratoconus.

that your nose "runs" when you cry due to tears from your eyes draining into the nose?

When you cry, tears are produced by the lacrimal glands in your eyes. While most of the tears roll down your face, some drain through tiny ducts called the nasolacrimal ducts, which connect your eyes to your nasal cavity.

Once in the nasal cavity, these tears mix with mucus, which is why your nose starts "running" when you cry. The fluid build-up in the nose can make it feel like it's congested or dripping.

Eye Injury Prevention Month, observed throughout October, is a dedicated campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of eye safety and preventing eye injuries both at home and in the workplace.
Here are some key reminders to note in the course of the month and (obviously) beyond:
•Wear protective eyewear during high-risk activities, such as using chemicals or sharp tools.
•Be cautious of UV exposure; sunglasses and appropriate eye protection are essential.
•Educate yourself and others about safe practices to avoid preventable injuries.
