Social prescribing is about connecting people with non-clinical groups and activities to support their mental health and wellbeing. It can include things like art classes, physical activity, gardening or volunteering.

This Social Prescribing Day, we celebrate the outstanding contributions of our Link Workers and Welcome Team.

By listening to people’s individual needs, our team connects them with the best community support and activities to promote positive wellbeing and ease things like loneliness, anxiety, and stress.

Our team in Aberdeen work alongside all 28 GP practices and are one of Scotland’s first city-wide, fully embedded link worker services.

Our West Lothian service is fully embedded within the local NHS Wellbeing Hub in Boghall and Livingston, bringing professionals and community organisations together so people can access the support they need through one simple, joined-up service.

Social prescribing has helped many people move towards a happier, healthier life, and we are proud to join others in celebrating this special day.

“Your legacy gift will be in safe hands, helping us to change and save many more lives.”

These words from SAMH trustee Rachel Birch come from lived experience.

When Rachel became suddenly disabled while caring for her toddler, her mental health spiralled. She found herself suicidal and struggling to cope. SAMH was the only mental health service in her area able to offer immediate support, without a long wait and without needing inpatient care.

That support kept Rachel safe until she could access NHS services.

And today, she’s a SAMH trustee, helping us reach even more people.

Now more than ever, as funding decreases and demand rises, gifts in Wills help safeguard the future of our services - from innovative community spaces like The Nooks, to the frontline support people rely on every day.

Come with us to launch a mental health campaign 🎬

People with mental illness die on average 15 years earlier than people without, too often due to discrimination in our healthcare system.

This week we launched Show Up: a new campaign calling for urgent action to address the early and preventable deaths of people living with mental illness.

Life expectancy shouldn't come down to a roll of a dice 🎲

We're asking you to write to your MSPs and election candidates, and learn more about how to Show Up for someone living with mental illness.

Scotland’s mental health is as bad as it has ever been, and the current system is not meeting the needs of the people it was set up to help.

It’s time to take action and create change for mental health in Scotland. Ahead of the Scottish Parliament election on 7 May, we've published our manifesto calling for radical reform and increased investment.

Bryan Millan joined our Chief Exec, Billy Watson, to launch our Show Up campaign yesterday and share his own experiences of mental health stigma.

Bryan, from Edinburgh, had his physical pain dismissed by a GP as a result of his anxiety and depression. He lived with chronic knee pain for eight years until being diagnosed with hereditary spastic paraplegia, a rare condition that causes mobility problems and muscle stiffness and weakness.

Bryan said: “The exact words from the locum GP who I initially went to about my knee pain were: ‘the pain is all in your head’. At that time, I was on medication for depression and anxiety, and had survived an attempt to take my life. That reaction definitely made it more difficult for me to seek medical help in the future.

"The delay in my diagnosis and treatment meant living with severe pain for years longer, and negatively impacted my mental health and wellbeing. I'm backing the Show Up campaign so that no one else has to experience this kind of stigma."

People with mental illness die on average 15 years earlier than people without, too often due to discrimination in our healthcare system.

Two-thirds of these early deaths are from preventable causes which are routinely overlooked or dismissed because of a diagnosis of mental illness.

Life expectancy shouldn't come down to the roll of a dice 🎲

We visited the Scottish Parliament today to launch our Show Up campaign, urging action to improve the life expectancy of people with a mental illness.

On average, people with a mental illness are dying 15 years earlier than people without.

Bryan, 48 from Edinburgh, had his physical pain dismissed by a GP as a result of his anxiety and depression. Eight years later, he was finally diagnosed with hereditary spastic paraplegia.

"The exact words from the locum GP who I initially went to about my knee pain were: ‘the pain is all in your head’.

"The delay in my diagnosis and treatment meant living with severe pain for years longer, and negatively impacted my mental health and wellbeing."

Scotland is in a mental health crisis.

Two people die by su***de every day, loneliness is reaching epidemic proportions, and demand for mental health support is through the roof. We need urgent action to address this crisis.

That's why, today, we're launching our Manifesto for the 2026 Scottish Parliament Election.

We're asking for the Scottish Government to:

- Support our 'Show Up' anti-stigma campaign

- Immediately increase both direct and NHS mental health spending

- Consider the evidence we bring forward from The Nook, our community mental health model, for a national rollout

- Introduce a dedicated Community Link Work Service to all CAMHS teams across Scotland
Increase national su***de prevention funding to at least £6m annually
