One in four people in Scotland will have a mental health problem at some point in their life. This means that you may know someone with a mental health problem, or maybe you're worried about your own mental health. At SAMH we believe there is no health without mental health. We're here to provide help, information and support; to campaign on behalf of people with mental health problems and to raise money to fund our vital work. We're here for everyone, and we're here for you. SAMH is Scotland's leading mental health charity

Mental health is not an adjective, it's real lived experience 🧡

Saying ‘they are bipolar’ might make someone feel like they are their condition, rather than a person living with a condition. Bipolar disorder is not a personality quirk or a way to describe someone’s mood swings; it’s a complex diagnosis that people live with every day.

The words we choose can either reinforce stigma or help dismantle it. Person-first language recognises the individual before the diagnosis and helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health problems.

When updating her Will, June decided to include a legacy to us.

"I hope my legacy gift will help SAMH in its campaigning to raise awareness of mental illness.

"Talking about mental health and trying to identify all the reasons for mental illness is such a big and tremendously important task, but it is the first step to helping more people."

Choosing to leave a gift to SAMH in your Will supports us to create a brighter, more mentally healthy Scotland for generations to come.

In partnership with Procast, Dalziel Rugby Club are promoting mental health awareness across their community by having SAMH in pride of place on their kit!

"Together, we’re working to create an environment where mental health is openly discussed, stigma is challenged, and support is always within reach.

"We believe that rugby is more than just a sport - it’s a platform of connection, resilience and growth. Through our shared values and ongoing collaboration, we're helping to build a stronger, more compassionate community both on and off the pitch."

As the days get shorter and nights draw in, some people experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD) - a type of depression linked to seasonal change 🌡️

It’s more than “just feeling gloomy” about the weather: SAD can affect sleep, energy, appetite, and motivation 🧡

If your low mood lasts more than a couple of weeks or affects daily life, it’s okay to reach out to your GP or a resource like our Info Service, who can point you in the right direction for help and resources.

“Ciar was a larger-than-life character and a huge presence in the local mod scene. Ciar was a true fan, right down to his clothes and his parka.

"We would spend many weekends listening to music, in particular northern soul. Music is what would bring us all together as a friend group."

In 2017, James sadly lost his friend Ciar. This year, he took the opportunity to bring a group of old friends together for a walk up Goatfell – the highest point on Arran – to raise money and celebrate Ciar’s life.

“What I’ve learned is that you don’t need a tragedy to come together. Talk and be around other people, try to laugh, and don’t take life too serious! That’s what Ciar would have told us.”

"The initial trigger was coming to terms with my sexuality. I was facing a lot of difficult emotions, and I didn't have the tools to process them."

Last week, our media volunteer Stacey shared her experiences of su***de with Glasgow Live.

"It wasn't until I started opening up that I realized there was support out there, through organisations like SAMH.

"A lot of people think that talking about mental health has to be a big event. It doesn't have to be a formal conversation; it's just about sharing your true, authentic self and taking the mask down a little."

You might sometimes see people use terms like OCD to describe being tidy.

However, compulsive thoughts can focus on a much wider variety of sources, like fear of harm, contamination and much more. Our media volunteers have also shared that there can be strengths associated with OCD too:

"I shouldn’t forget about the positive attributes I have as a result of my OCD. For example: I love the little things in life, and I have a strong imagination and curiosity." - Eddie, SAMH media volutneer

Language matters - and how we use it really goes a long way to reducing stigma surrounding mental health problems 🧡

National Records of Scotland have released the latest probable su***de statistics, showing that there were 704 probable deaths by su***de in Scotland last year.

Responding to these stats, Alex Cu***ng, our Executive Director of Delivery and Service Development, said:

“Every one of these deaths is devastating. A single su***de affects around 135 people on average, which means that almost 100,000 people were impacted by su***de in Scotland in 2024. We need to make sure we’re doing everything we can to support people who’ve lost someone to su***de and my heart goes out to all of them.

“We cannot read too much into a single year of data, especially after rising numbers in recent years, but the fall in deaths by su***de in 2024 is welcome. We need to re-double our collective efforts to prevent su***de across Scotland to make sure that the rate continues to go down and more lives are saved.

“It remains the case that middle-aged men and those from deprived backgrounds are most likely to die by su***de. We need increased national funding from the Scottish Government and ring-fenced local funding – where we can really work with communities to give them the help they need – if we’re to continue to make progress.

“There’s also something we can each do to help. If you’re worried about someone, ask them if they’re thinking about su***de. If they say no, they know they can come to you if they need to in the future. If they say yes, listen to what they have to say and then work with them to figure out how they can stay safe. Help is available.”

As part of Scotland's Mental Health Partnership, we are calling for immediate and decisive action from the next Scottish Government to address the mental health crisis.

The Partnership is made up of 17 professional bodies and third sector organisations who come together to create an informed collective voice on mental health.

Let's work together so that anyone who needs mental health support can ask once and get help fast.
