What is Yin Yoga?

Yin is a floor based, slow, relaxed Yoga practice which aims to decompress the joints of the lower back and pelvis.
With relaxed muscles during poses, the stress from the stretch then moves into the connective tissue surrounding the joints and into the joints themselves.
Then we hold for longer periods anything from 1 to 5 minutes.
This ancient concept has been brought into our modern-day consciousness through a collection of devoted teachers, one of whom is Paul Grilley. (http://paulgrilley.com/)
Paul’s approach is to teach a thorough anatomical understanding of the variations in skeletal structure.
This helps to abandon the idea of ‘aesthetic conceit’ and we can let go of typical notions of ‘I can’t do because…’ and then every body will truly benefit from this practise.

Why Yin?

This ‘quiet practise’ is the antidote to our busy lives. The Yin to our Yang.
It offers a space for the curious yogi to explore the physical, mental and spiritual boundaries within.
Stillness is encouraged in the postures, bringing a peaceful attitude towards this exploration.
We observe as the build up of tension in the body begins to dissipate.
Finding time to balance is the essence of any yoga practise, so allow Yin in to your life and embrace the far reaching and vital properties of becoming still.

My Yoga Journey

My own yoga journey began in the early 90’s, seeking a solution to the ubiquitous ‘bad back’.
However, after practising on my own from a big old book called ‘The encyclopaedia of pregnancy and birth’ which, although not technically a yoga book this then acted as my bible from which my life’s passion would emerge.
13 years on and after experiencing many styles and teachings from Iyengar to Feldenkrais, Hot Yoga to Dru I realised my dream of becoming a yoga teacher myself.
The following two years was a full-on blur of posture work, philosophy, reading, essays and anatomy which pushed me to my limits while at the same time being one of the most fulfilling things that I have ever done personally.
Now, having graduated my 500-hour teacher training course in Edinburgh I had built up a solid foundation of understanding through all of these subsequent experiences and trainings, but my light bulb moment came through an unknown practise called Yin.
I was obliged to attend an annual training day to develop my skills and picked Yin simply because it was the class which was geographically closest to me!
Little did I know that this innocuous decision would be yet another major turning point for me.
The practise spoke for itself and caused a seismic, holistic shift in me.
And so, I had landed at yet another unplanned moment on my yoga path which held all the significance of my first with the discovery of my yoga bible all those years ago.
Inevitably, I began attending workshops, seminars and training days on the subject of Yin before moving onto the next stage: teacher training.
I embarked on the Yin Yoga Teacher Training Program in California, studying with the internationally recognised pioneer of the discipline, Paul Grilley.
With levels one and two completed and incorporating my previous experiences and knowledge, I am now able to pass on my learnings and my love of this subtly powerful style of yoga.
If you’ve made it this far, I hope that you have enjoyed getting to know a little more about me by reading my story and I welcome you to join me as I continue my journey and develop along with my students of all levels.
I currently run classes for both beginners and the more experienced who are interested in Yin, as I was in the beginning.
Please reach out via email and I will be happy to discuss both with you. – Lindsay
