We were absolutely delighted to welcome Poppy, the incredible therapy dog, and her devoted trainer and companion to our Florence House community this week.
There is something quite magical about the moment Poppy walks through the door. Conversations pause, faces soften, and smiles appear almost instantly. Those living and working within Florence House have truly fallen in love with this gentle, affectionate and beautifully calm canine friend.
Throughout the day, Poppy made her way around the home, offering quiet companionship, a warm presence, and the kind of connection that doesn’t require words. For many of our residents, her visit sparked cherished memories of beloved pets from earlier in life — stories of loyal Labradors, mischievous terriers, faithful collies, and long afternoon walks. The reminiscence alone filled the room with warmth and laughter.
Beyond the joy, the benefits of pet therapy within care home communities are well recognised. Time spent with therapy animals has been shown to:
• Reduce blood pressure and heart rate
• Lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels
• Increase oxytocin — the hormone linked to bonding and emotional wellbeing
• Reduce feelings of anxiety and loneliness
• Encourage social interaction and communication
• Promote gentle movement and sensory engagement
For individuals living with dementia, the presence of a calm animal can also support emotional regulation, reduce agitation, and provide meaningful sensory comfort.
The impact of Poppy’s visit was felt long after she left. The conversations continued. The smiles lingered. The atmosphere felt lighter.
At Florence House, we are always seeking meaningful, person-centred experiences that nurture wellbeing — not just physically, but emotionally and socially too. Poppy reminds us that sometimes the simplest connections are the most powerful.
Thank you, Poppy. We can’t wait to see you again. 🐶💛
