ONE Week to go!

One week to go until the final part of our Why Stories Matter Series. 'Words, Pictures, Maps' will consider the specific aesthetic properties of picture books in particular and why they lend themselves so powerfully to the developmental tasks of the young reader.

We will think about the themes in a picture book, ‘The Wolves in the Wolves’, and the way in which this story provides suggestions for how to engage and re-engage with frightening feelings, eventually mastering them. We will then look at the final part of a case study that demonstrates these principles in action, and the way in which storytelling can support us to descend into the depths of our unconscious world and re-emerge richer and stronger as a result.

Calling our HDS Alumni!

Register now for our next Alumni gathering on 26 March where Gita Ingram & Susie Reade will be presenting ‘Just Playing?’ - A workshop based on their book ‘Child-led Therapy for Children with Complex Trauma’. It will focus on the main themes of the book and on the authors’ learning during the writing process.

The book draws together their long experience of working within a psychodynamic framework as occupational therapists in a CAMHS department. Away from the daily proximity of the clinical setting the writing provided an opportunity to jointly think about case material through a different lens. Their patients taught them much about the effects of trauma on a child’s sense of self and the children’s stories and artwork convey that in the book. This presentation is an opportunity to discuss some of this clinical work and dilemmas about therapy based on child-led play.
