A question a few people ask when it comes to muscle building, which is more important..

Volume or intensity?

When it comes to volume (how much work we do), we could do set after set but unless we are pushing ourselves and training as hard as we can each set, we arenโ€™t going to make much progress when it comes to building muscle.

So intensity (how hard we work) is always going to be the key factor, pushing ourselves each set and thinking how many reps we are closer to complete failure.

Doing a lot of next to nothing in the end is still going to equate to next to f**k all ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

If youโ€™re working in a calorie deficit, unless you have really miscalculated your calorie consumption, or have an underlying health issue then you canโ€™t gain body fat in a calorie deficit. โฃ

There can be many reasons why your weight on the scales will fluctuate dailyโ€ฆโฃ

๐Ÿ’ฆ Water Rentention - a recent increase in resistance training (sore muscles retain water) and soreness, bruising or injury causes inflammation (retains water) and a recent increase in cardio increases blood volume from plasma and new blood cells. โฃโฃ

Menstrual Cycle ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ - About 1/3 of women have noticeable swings in weight during the week before menstruation/during menstruation of upto 5lbs.โฃโฃ

Lack of Sleep ๐Ÿ˜ด - Sleep deprivation causes changes to hormones that regulate hunger and appetite, meaning you are more likely to eat more due to a lack of sleep. โฃโฃ

Stress ๐Ÿคฏ - Stress causes the body to produce more of the hormone Cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that promotes body fat and makes it harder to lose weight. โฃ

๐‘ฎ๐’๐’‚๐’๐’” - Set goals of what we want to achieve this year. Whether it be get fitter, leaner, stronger. This will give us a reason and a purpose to get the most out of our time in the gym. โฃ

๐๐ฅ๐š๐ง - Get a structured plan in place of how we are going to achieve these goals. โฃ
โฃ
๐€๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง - Take action in order to achieve these goals. Show up, be consistent and commit to the behaviours that align with your goals and you will succeed ๐Ÿ”ฅโฃ

What also to bare in mind if we havenโ€™t been training consistently of late is not to go full steam ahead and try and be a hero in your first session back. Ross first came to me looking to drop some body fat and get into a better routine with fitness, going to the gym was something completely new to him. We didnโ€™t overly restrict calories, and Ross was still able to eat out and enjoy social events. By accounting for what calories we were inputting, Ross could achieve this in a far better and controlled manner, there was no quick fix, just hard work and consistency, whilst being able to enjoy the process ๐Ÿ”‘ โฃโฃ

At first, like iI tell many of my clients, too many changes at first can make us completely lose focus and is hard to master. So we focused on the training, continually trying to progress each week whilst having a flexible diet approach. When performing an exercise in the gym we choose this exercise for a reason and to serve a purpose. โฃโฃ

The main purpose for each exercise that we choose should be to engage the muscle groups that each exercise works for as long as possible. โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
Each exercise should be performed with a slow and controlled tempo, in order to engage and stimulate that muscle group while we perform each rep.โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
So thereโ€™s no point in rushing through each rep in record breaking times as we will only be stimulating that muscle for a split second. (Always slow it down and keep it controlled) โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
When it comes to muscle growth always think about using the correct form and technique when it comes to muscle engagement. โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
Youโ€™ll be far better off dropping the weight down and using correct form. Stop trying to be a hero and repping the full rack with no real control. The exercise is served to engage and do it with a purpose ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

Itโ€™s the start of a new year, the holidays are over and itโ€™s time to get back to the grind ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ โฃ

For some of us, we will be feeling like weโ€™ve completely over indulged over the Christmas period. Do not stress, Christmas is all about spending time with family, and enjoying foods we maybe wouldnโ€™t have on a regular basis. Progress isnโ€™t going to be lost, itโ€™s about what we do the other 51 weeks of the year that is going to make a difference! โฃ
โฃ
Another worry for most is that theyโ€™ve missed a few gym sessions over the festive period and that their going to lose the gains and progress that theyโ€™ve made. Again do not stress, muscle loss is a slow process, so missing a few sessions is not going result in losing gains.โฃ
โฃ
Finally when restarting, some feel the need to make up for lost time and go in gung ho, doing extra and lifting too heavy. Now this could lead to a few negative factors such as, excessive muscle soreness, May get injured and result in needing more time off. So be sensible, get a plan in place both for training and nutritionally, and ease your way back in. This will be more effective in the long run, allowing less soreness and allowing us to actually be able to train more. โฃ

Things havenโ€™t always been plain sailing with Hayley as she admits herself. From initially hating every second she spent in the gym, struggling with her nutrition and completing her steps away from the gym, sheโ€™s now at a point she believes in the process and has a far better relationship with food.
