I have been quiet but working away in the background! So here is my current project - what are inflammatory markers and how does that affect your health

Inflammatory markers are substances in the blood (or sometimes other body fluids) that increase or decrease in response to inflammation in the body. Doctors use them to detect, monitor, or assess the severity of diseases like infections, autoimmune disorders, and chronic conditions.

Common inflammatory markers:
• C-reactive protein (CRP)
• One of the most commonly used markers
• Rises quickly in response to inflammation or infection
• Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
• Measures how fast red blood cells settle in a test tube
• Faster rate = more inflammation
• Procalcitonin (PCT)
• Often used to detect bacterial infections
• Helps distinguish bacterial vs viral infections
• Ferritin
• Normally stores iron, but also increases during inflammation
• Fibrinogen
• A clotting protein that rises in inflammatory states
• Interleukins (e.g., IL-6)
• Cytokines (immune signaling proteins) that increase during inflammation
• Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)
• Another cytokine involved in systemic inflammation

Why they are important:
• Help diagnose conditions (e.g., infections, rheumatoid arthritis)
• Monitor disease activity (e.g., lupus, inflammatory bowel disease)
• Track response to treatment

Simple way to think about it:

Inflammatory markers are like “alarm signals” in your blood that tell doctors something inflammatory is happening in your body.

Many chronic symptoms overlap and can sometimes be linked to underlying health or environmental triggers.
Awareness empowers change — always research, listen to your body, and seek informed support.
